A rusty sink drain not only detracts from your kitchen's appearance but will cause discoloration to the surrounding sink bowl if left untreated. Replacing your sink drain with a new one is a quick and easy job. Make sure that you purchase the correct size of drain by first removing the old drain and bringing it along with you to your local hardware store for comparison. Instructions as follows: Firstly, turn off the two valves on the water supply lines located underneath the sink. Place a bucket under the P-trap. The P-trap is the U-shaped pipe under the sink. If you have a plastic P-trap, loosen the fittings by hand. If the P-trap is metal, use a pipe wrench to loosen the fittings. Secondly, remove the P-trap from the pipes. Any water that was sitting in the P-trap will drain into the bucket. Reach underneath the sink and use a pipe wrench to loosen the fitting holding the drain in place. Twist the fitting all the way down the threaded portion of the pipe. Thirdly, secure a pair of vise grips to the straight pipe underneath the kitchen sink. Hold onto the vise grips and push the drain up. Grab onto the top of the drain with a pair of channel-lock pliers. Unscrew the top of the drain from the pipe. If the drain is corroded, use a hacksaw to cut through the pipe to remove the drain. Make the cut underneath the sink, above the extending rod. Fourthly, use sink cleaner on the sink's opening to remove any dirt and discoloration. Twist off the top of the new kitchen sink drain. Apply a strip of plumber's putty around the underside of the drain. Push the drain into the sink's opening. Fifthly, screw the new drain's bottom back onto the top from underneath the sink. Turn the fitting until it is sitting tight against the bottom of the sink. Use the pipe wrench to finish tightening it. Do not over-tighten. Sixthly, remove the extra plumber's putty from around the top of the drain with your finger. If you are replacing a pop-up drain, slide the new pop-up assembly into the drain opening. Pull the old rod out from the hole in the back of the sink and push the new rod in. Seventhly, put the short end of the ball joint rod assembly into the hole on the straight pipe's side. Twist the fitting to secure the rod in place. Hold the bent clip with two holes in front of the rod so that it is bent toward the rod. Slide the clip onto the rod through the top hole. Eighthly, place the end of the pull rod through the two holes on the top of the strap. The bottom of the strap has a row of holes; put the ball joint rod through the second to fourth hole. Bend the clip in half and put the rod through the other hole. Adjust the height of the pop-up drain. Tighten the screw on the top of the strap once the desired height is achieved. Ninthly, wrap plumber's tape around the threaded ends of the P-trap and the connecting pipe. Wrap the tape in the same direction the pipe is twisted on. Do not use plumber's tape on a plastic P-trap. Tenthly, line up the trap's openings with the two pipes under the sink. Tighten the fittings with the pipe wrench. Turn on the water to the sink. Open the taps and check for leaks. Test the pull rod to ensure that the pop-up assembly is working properly. Tips & Warnings If you are not installing a pop-up drain, skip Steps 7 and 8. All other steps remain the same.
