When it comes time for Halloween, many people like to get scared out of their wits. One of the best ways to get into the scare spirit is to visit a haunted house. Haunted attractions are easy to find during the month of October, and some people make it their All Hallows Eve tradition to find the scariest haunted house attraction in town. For those looking for even more of a thrill, a little searching will turn up real houses where people claim to have truly encountered ghosts and other-worldly events. Thrill seekers can visit them and take tours and maybe, just maybe, encounter some ghostly apparitions while they are there. Some of the most popular haunted houses hire people to dress up in convincing costumes and makeup and scare visitors as they explore the attraction. These people may pop out from hidden corners unexpectedly, startling passers-by. They may be dressed as ghosts, with white makeup and ethereal clothing. They can add an element of creepiness by making ghostly noises, like crying or screaming. Other costumed actors may be dressed as zombies with bloody scars and vacant looks. They may approach the scare-seeking guests and chase them in the house. Scary props are an essential part of the haunted house experience as well. Dark drapery and cobwebs can add to the atmosphere, and a fog machine can work wonders in scaring people by temporarily impairing their ability to see farther than a few steps in front of them. Haunted houses are usually very dark, and if they have a light on, it is most likely set to burn out or be flipped off just at a critical moment in the experience. Of course, much of the fun of a haunted house is knowing that you are perfectly safe. Thrill-seekers who choose haunted attractions often do so because they can laugh it off in the end, no matter how scared they may feel during the experience. Supposed weapons are known to be harmless props and the creepy figures are known to be actors. The willing suspension of disbelief makes this attraction much like a stage show, but the audience gets to participate and interact in this case. At the end of the day, the visitors know that they have paid for a good scare, but they will be kept safe. Those who get bored with the usual scare tactics may choose to visit any of the numerous haunted houses around the world that are considered to be truly haunted. In these houses, they may take tours and be led by a guide, but they can have no guarantees that what they will see is false. Many local people truly believe these houses to be haunted by the spirits of those who died in some horrible way or who left behind unfinished business.
