Many people who join the airsoft world get extremely excited about airsoft sniper rifles. Snipers have been glorified in movies and films as heroic lone rangers able to take out an entire company of enemies from a distance. While it is certainly true that sniper rifles have incredible range and this is also true of airsoft sniper rifles, most people tend to have a distorted idea of how a sniper actually operates in the field. There is also the fact that airsoft snipers are very vulnerable when faced with automatic airsoft guns at close range. |
Sniper rifles are by definition more powerful than regular airsoft guns, because they need to drive BBs over a much longer distance in order to qualify as sniper rifles. One thing that you have to be aware of, however, is that most airsoft playing fields place limits on how powerful your gun can be, so it pays to find out what those limits are at the field or fields that you are likely to be playing at before you invest in a sniper rifle. It would be a minor tragedy for you to spend money on a sniper rifle only to find out that it is too powerful for you to use in your games.
One of the problems that sniper rifles have to overcome is accuracy. Because snipers shoot over such long distances, sniper rifles have to be extremely accurate in order to be effective. This means two things. The first is that the barrels of sniper rifles are much longer than most other airsoft guns, simply because a longer barrel means that BBs are more stable in flight, making the gun more accurate. Second, sniper rifles have to be made using quality materials and workmanship in order to be accurate. Low quality sniper rifles tend to be highly inaccurate, and not worth the money. This means that if you want to buy a sniper rifle that you can actually use on the playing field, then you have to be prepared to pay for a good one.
You also need to consider whether the playing style of a sniper suits you. In order to get a shot, real snipers spend hours sneaking around to find the perfect place from which to fire. Snipers always take their shots from a position where they have a distance advantage over the enemy, as this ensures that the enemy is unable to fire back effectively and also cannot charge the sniper as they will take heavy casualties as they attempt to cover the ground between them.
On the airsoft field, where you do not have the option of inserting into the field before the game starts, this means having to rush in with the rest of your teammates and immediately running to find good cover. You then have to wait in the same spot to get a clear shot, sometimes for hours.
If this sort of playing style suits you, however, then you should definitely consider purchasing one of the airsoft sniper rifles available on the market. There is nothing like the thrill of taking an enemy out from so far away that he has no idea what hit him. Just remember that if you let enemies get close with automatic airsoft guns, then you are most probably out of the game because the sniper rifle simply has too low a rate of fire to be effective at close range.
