Summer kitchens may be free-standing buildings or well-ventilated rooms--such as screened porches--connected to the main house. They're designed to keep the heat and clutter of traditional kitchen chores out of the house during the summer. Most summer kitchens are furnished with the appliances and implements necessary to complete the tasks generally performed in your home's regular kitchen. Food Preservation A canner filled with jars of fruits and vegetables boiling on the stovetop releases heat, making your kitchen an uncomfortable place in the dog days of summer. Preparing food for canning means baskets and bags packed with produce taking up space on your counters. Work spaces are given over to chopping, slicing and pureeing. Since the process can take more than one day, you find yourself with little room to prepare a regular meal. Moving the materials, implements, food and appliances needed for food preservation to a screened area where the heat can escape is a good way to keep your kitchen clear and your house cool. If moving your stove is out of the question, don't worry. An electric or gas fueled hot plate works well. Add a table and some chairs for prepping the food and organizing your jars and other materials. A picnic table or even a piece of plywood placed on two saw horses works well. Laundry If you live in a mild climate where freezing water pipes are not a worry, consider using part of your screened summer kitchen as a laundry center. Install your washer and dryer in the area. Bring in freestanding shelves to organize items such as laundry detergent, bleach, clothes pins and fabric softeners. If your space is large enough leave the ironing board set up all the time. If not, fold it up and bring it out when needed. Set up racks to dry your delicate items. Run a clothesline inside for use during inclement weather. Food Preparation Historically, summer kitchens featured cook stoves fueled with wood where meal preparation, baking and canning were done. If you're not interested in replicating a vintage summer kitchen, there are more modern ways to accomplish these tasks. Invest in a toaster oven designed for baking and broiling as well as toasting. Substitute a hot plate for your cook top and consider purchasing a countertop microwave and a small refrigerator, like one you might use in a college dorm bathroom. Stock the kitchen with the implements you use everyday and be sure to include dishware, glassware and silverware. Socializing The kitchen is often the heart of your home, where people congregate to talk, eat, and enjoy each other's company. A screened summer kitchen is the perfect place to gather to enjoy nature without the annoyance of insects and bad weather. Socialize with your guests while preparing a meal, or arrange for a couple of friends to help you chop vegetables and fruits for canning. Host a casual get-together or simply plan a romantic dinner for two.
