Sniper rifles have inspired the imaginations of whole generations of young boys and men, so much so that a kind of romance has grown up around the art of sniping. It is no wonder that airsoft sniper rifles are extremely popular in the world of airsoft, and there are a great many different airsoft sniper rifles being produced for sale. In reality, the difference between regular spring airsoft rifles and airsoft sniper rifles can be rather small, and there are no specific characteristics that define what is a sniper rifle and what is not. If you are trying your hand at airsoft sniping for the first time, then you will most probably want to start with one of the cheap airsoft sniper rifles, in case you find that the role of sniper does not suit you. |
What Makes A Sniper Rifle?
As mentioned before, there are no distinct criteria that make a rifle a sniper rifle. There are, however, some general characteristics that help to identify sniper rifles. First is the length of the barrel. Sniper rifles are meant to shoot over long distances, so it is important that they have high levels of accuracy. Otherwise, it would simply be impossible to hit a target at long distances. In order to achieve such accuracy, the barrel of the gun needs to be considerably longer than an ordinary rifle barrel.
In addition, because sniper rifles need to propel BBs over such long distances, a great deal of power is needed. This means that the internal mechanism of the gun needs to be stronger than in ordinary rifles, so most sniper rifles are single-shot guns, and even the more advanced sniper rifles are only semi-automatic. A fully automatic sniper rifle simply does not make sense.
The Better Option?
Airsoft sniper rifles are either gas-powered or spring-operated. There are no electric airsoft sniper rifles because the electric motors simply cannot be made powerful enough while staying small enough to fit in the body of the gun. There is a fierce ongoing debate in the airsoft world between those who believe that spring-powered sniper rifles are better and those who prefer gas-powered sniper rifles. In truth, each type of rifle has its advantages and disadvantages, and the better type of rifle for you is ultimately dependent on your preferences and how you use the gun.
Spring-operated sniper rifles sometimes require a great deal of energy to draw back the bolt and cock the gun, which can be a real disadvantage when you need to fire several shots in quick succession as your arm will quickly tire. Gas-operated rifles, on the other hand, are limited by the amount of gas in each canister and the number of canisters that you can carry. The more canisters you carry, the heavier your load will be and the more difficult it will be to maneuver on the field.
Making A Decision
One way to decide which type of sniper rifle you prefer is to buy cheap airsoft sniper rifles in both types and test them both. This way you will be able to tell for yourself whether spring airsoft rifles are your preference when it comes to snipers or whether gas-operated airsoft rifles are the better option for you.
