I m not a frequent flyer. At least not any more. Earlier in mycareer as a reporter I used to spend as much as a month of everyyear travelling. But for the past decade, my definition of a roadhas been a two-zone transit pass. So when I went to Europe this summer, a lot had changed. It wasn t all bad. I found out you could get a pretty good fullbody massage from a man wearing rubber gloves if you left your belton when you walked through the metal detector. For free. And you can now plug in your computer at your seat so the movie youare watching doesn t end abruptly by fading to black just when youwere about to find out whodunnit. On the downside, however, I was struck by the re-emergence of theclass system. By downside, I mean the view from the cheap seats.Life has improved for people who can afford to travel up front andfor frequent flyers. But part of the way airlines make the pamperedtravellers feel special is by letting everyone else know they arestuck in the modern equivalent of steerage. It starts in the airport. While the rest of us wait more or lesspatiently for our seat numbers to be called to board, we get ournoses rubbed in our peasant status by watching the royalty, thebusiness class and what Air Canada calls the Elite and Super Elitefrequent flyers being invited to board at their leisure. That means the executive class can already be seated in theirpersonal sleeping pods on overseas flights when the hoi polloiparade through on their way to the impressively lesseraccommodations in the back. On Air Canada overseas flights, what it calls its Executive FirstSuites are described as flat out wonderful seats that reclineinto a bed at the touch of a button with ambient mood lighting insync with time zones to ease jet lag. In Economy class, there are seats. At least on overseas flights,the meals are included in the fare, as are the drinks. On domestic flights, the ticket gets you in the door and covers thecost of the seatbelt, but little else. The free soft drinks are child-sized and the snacks are offered inportions that would make Jenny Craig proud. A pillow and blanketand headphones are available for a nominal fee. Airlines are not utopian fantasies, of course. People in executiveclass pay significantly more than those of us in the back. Theyhave a right to expect better service. But do they really have toclose the curtains to the business class with such a flourish aftertakeoff? Especially when you know it means you are flying in theline-up-for-the-washroom class. And equal doesn t necessarily mean better. On an Air Berlin flightwith no business section, my wife and I experienced the mostbizarre food offering to date, a choice between a coldbreaded-sausage that was packaged like an ice cream bar or a Twix.My wife wisely went for the Twix. Part of the experience of flying is who you get stuck beside. Or infront of. I m the guy who won t let you lean your seat backbecause my knees are already pressed against it. So you canunderstand my reaction to the news this month from WestJet that itis going after the first-class business by cramming everyone elsein a little tighter. WestJet is adding legroom to the first four rows to create abusiness class section. They ll get it by tightening up thespacing farther back. I don t expect our guests to feel any impact from thatreconfiguration, but we ll certainly see the revenue benefit, WestJet CEO Gregg Saretsky told The Canadian Press. I guess he s talking about the short guests, not those of us whobang our heads on door frames. And this just in from United Airlines. The Chicago-based carrier isinstalling slimmer seats so that it can squeeze more people ontoits planes, following the lead of Alaska and Southwest Airlines. The German-made seats are covered with thinner foam thanconventional seats, allowing United to add another row six morepassengers on its narrow-bodied Airbus jets without reducing legroom. Some narrow-bodied passengers may find them a tad hard, butmaybe an extra will be available soon for a nominal fee, whateverthat means. Ah, progress.
