A stone floor has its own special kind of natural beauty. From Italian marble to limestone, a stone floor is the combination of rich looks with incredible durability. But even stone requires regular maintenance to retain its look through use, even from normal wear and tear. But if properly cared for, a stone floor can last well beyond any other flooring type, and remain as beautiful as the day it was installed. Cleaning Stay away from chemical polishers for shining your stone floor surface. The shine in a stone is naturally produced through the finishing process which consists of grinding the surface flat. Once finished, the crystals natural to the stone's makeup reflect light which produces the gloss of the stone. There is no polish involved in the process, so no polish is necessary to retain it. The gloss is removed from stone due to scratches developed in the stone's surface from the dirt and debris ground into the surface with use. To restore the shine you must regrind the stone's surface flat. You can extend the time between grinding, however, by dust mopping the floor often to remove dirt particles. Mop the stone regularly as well with a neutral soap solution like stone soap. When mopping keep your mop damp as excess water can stain the surface of the cobblestone. For marble floors, you should immediately dry the surface after mopping. By polishing the stones every two or three years, you can further delay necessary regrinding. Polishing is usually done using a polishing compound applied with a mechanical abrasive. Common polishing compounds include aluminum or tin oxides and water. Polishing should be done as soon after the stone begins to lose its luster as possible. When grinding becomes necessary, you will require a strong abrasive. A silicon carbide or diamond abrasive will quickly grind the surface down to a brand new glossy shine. Protection While peculiar stone is highly durable, some protection of the stone's surface is necessary after installation and during maintenance periods. For new stone floor, use a sealant to protect the surface for a longer period of time. Use of a sealant prevents the scratches that occur from dirt and debris, retaining the color and appearance of the stone through use. A sealer also protects the stone from staining. Even water can stain a porous stone like marble. For exterior stone including marble, granite, slate, and limestone, siloxane sealants are highly recommended to protect the stone against high humidity or weather exposure. Sealants if used should be reapplied annually, or every nine months for marble floors. Finally, let me have a conclusion.
