News CEDIA Region 1 outlines initiatives for a 'brighter future'(24/10/2011) At its AGM held on Tuesday 4th October, Robert Hallam, Chair ofCEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association)outlined the trade body"s current and future initiativeswhich are laying the platform for a "brighter future"when "a gathering economic recovery will benefit all ourbusinesses". As part of the combined CEDIA AGM / Business and Technology Forumevent, the CEDIA AGM provided a detailed review of activities inthe past 12 months and highlighted future plans in front of anaudience of more than 80 CEDIA members. "The current economic climate continues to bring significantchallenges to our industry alongside many other sectors",explained CEDIA Chair, Robert Hallam. "The CEDIA Board andExecutive staff are actively engaged in work that"s focusedon creating greater visibility for the Association and its members.We continue to make progress, especially in reaching out tointerior designers, architects and other professionals, andeducating these audiences on the benefits of working with CEDIAmembers". CEDIA"s ongoing Outreach programme promotes the industry toprofessional designers and specifiers. This year CEDIA has produceda new Home Technology Guide for this audience and invested in a newdatabase of architects for marketing purposes. More than 220 CEDIAmembers are now qualified to present the Association"s"Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes" CPD, withover 550 presentations delivered to architects and specifiers inthe last twelve months. The course has been delivered in UK,France, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa and Spain. More designprofessionals attended the CEDIA Home Technology Event than everbefore this year, ensuring the event"s place as a keyattraction not just for installers but for architects, interiordesigners, lighting designers and property developers too. In education, CEDIA has successfully launched a dedicated educationwebsite () for the industry. Associationmembers are also benefiting from a partnership with the CISCOAcademy at Birmingham City University which is making specialist IPcourses and qualifications more easily accessible to members. Inthe last year 89 individuals achieved Certified status. This bringsthe total to 678 across the Region. On-line technical and businesslearning resources also continue to increase with a total of 13white papers including 2 management resources available to downloadfrom the CEDIA website. Other highlights included the CEDIA Awards. The scheme whichattracted a record 98 project entries from 10 countries andculminated in a sell-out Gala Dinner for 300 guests in April washailed by CEDIA as the "best to date". Category andentry information on the 2012 scheme was unveiled at the AGM. Inmarketing, CEDIA highlighted extensive media coverage in specialisthomes and interiors publications, national press and on TValongside continuing innovation and progress in e-communications,social media and newsletters. CEDIA also revealed an upward trend in membership with 75 newmembers having joined since January 2011. International membershipis growing rapidly with France, Spain, Italy, South Africa and theNetherlands all now having 10 or more members. The Association ison track to grow membership to its highest level ever by the end of2011. CEDIA also plans to build on its Connect with CEDIA roadshowevents which have provided invaluable networking opportunities formembers and non-members in Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, London,Edinburgh and Newcastle this year. "Outreach and Education remain cornerstone"s ofCEDIA"s work", says Robert Hallam. "We urge allCEDIA members to support our Outreach activity and help raiseawareness of the industry for everybody"s benefit. InEducation we are developing programmes that will add weight to newand existing courses and ensure that our industry-specific contentis recognised by established education bodies. We"redelighted that membership in 2011 is set to be at its all timehighest and will continue to build on these foundations in theyears ahead. As the business environment improves we look forwardto a bright future for the Association and its members". The Business and Technology Forum featured a range of well-attendedpanel discussion sessions looking at key technology and businessissues facing the industry. These included Cloud-based services,with a fascinating contribution from headline speaker, AndyKirkpatrick, Director – Connected Home, BT Innovate &Design. Other topics covered included HD distribution, the businessbenefits of fewer big jobs versus more smaller jobs and thechallenges in protecting quality standards in the industry.
