Traditional fireplaces often lose more heat from the home than they produce. While they continue to be a popular feature in homes, many homeowners are updating their old fireplaces with a fireplace insert. You can install a ventless or vented insert that operates on gas. The insert installation often is simply a matter of setting the new fireplace insert inside the existing chimney's firebox. You do have to call a licensed plumber to run the gas line and make the connections in order to be in line with municipal building codes. Instructions of fireplace insert installations as follows: Firstly, locate where you plan to cut the hole in the exterior stone wall for the vented insert. Depending on the fireplace insert, run the vent directly out the back of the insert or run it up for a few feet and then out the wall. Secondly, cut the vent hole using a hole saw. Slide the vent pipe through the hole to the outside of the house. Put a vent cap on the exterior pipe. Attach the cap to the exterior with screws. Run a bead of silicone caulking around the vent cap to seal it in place. Thirdly, prepare the vent connections inside the firebox but do not connect the fireplace insert at this time. Fourthly, locate the electrical line you plan to use for the fireplace insert. Turn off electricity to that line. Follow the specific directions from your fireplace insert to wire the insert into the electrical line. Typically you connect white wires to white wires, black to black and green to green with wire nuts. Some models simply plug in to a nearby wall outlet. If you are uncomfortable working with electricity, hire an electrician. Fifthly, call a licensed plumber to run the gas line for the fireplace insert. After he runs the line and connects the insert to it, slide the fireplace insert into position inside the fireplace's firebox, making sure to connect the vent pipes as you position it. Turn the electricity back on and make sure the insert is operational. Sixthly, slide the fireplace surround that comes with the fireplace insert into position between the existing fireplace surround and the new fireplace insert. This covers the old opening to the firebox. Set the gas logs in position inside the insert.
