When humans began to establish permanent settlements, they turned to stone as a building material because of its durability and abundance in many locations. Newer construction materials and techniques have been developed that are cheaper and easier to work with than stone, which is now often used as a decorative material. If you like the appearance of stone buildings, you can give your house that look by installing stone veneer. This is a building material made of concrete that is cast to look like stone. Instructions as follows: Firstly, power-wash the stone walls and the back of the veneer stones. The cleaner the surface, the better the mortar will adhere to it. Secondly, mix a batch of mortar consisting of two parts washed sand and one part Portland cement until it is about the consistency of mashed potatoes. Stir the mortar for at least five minutes to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Thirdly, dampen the walls by applying water with a masonry brush. You want the wall to be damp, but not be dripping wet. Wetting the surface of the wall prevents the wall from absorbing moisture from the mortar, which can cause it to crack. Fourthly, wet the back of the first sandstone with the masonry brush to get it damp. Fifthly, apply a 1/2-inch layer of mortar to the back of the stone and the wall where it is being installed. Sixthly, press the stone into the mortar on the wall, rotating it slightly as you set it. Seventhly, install the rest of the stones on the walls, using the same process you used for the first stone. If any mortar seeps up between the stones as you're setting them, wipe it away with a trowel or brush before it sets. Eighthly, apply mortar to the gaps between the stones, using a grout bag. Ninthly, smooth the surface of the mortar by running a joint tool over the gaps. Allow the mortar to set for the time specified on the packaging. Tenthly, cover the stones with concrete sealer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Tips & Warnings If you number the peculiar stones in the sequence in which you're installing them before you begin, you can make the installation process go faster. If you're applying stone veneer to a painted surface, you must sandblast all the paint away first. This procedure is for applying stone veneer to masonry surfaces. If you want to apply the veneer to a frame construction, you must install a vapor barrier first, followed by metal lath covered with a 1/2- to 3/4-inch-thick scratch coat of two parts washed sand to one part Portland cement. Create shallow horizontal grooves in the scratch coat, and allow it to set fully before you proceed.
