SAN FRANCISCO, California, May 1. THE spring portion of high schoolswimming is coming to a close with several high school statechampionships in mid-May. California does not hold a state championship in the sport ofswimming. In the next few weeks, Swimming World will report on nine sectional meets which will be held throughoutthe state. First up: San Francisco. Lincoln's Jared Vu and Kirstie Chan set individual records duringthe CIF San Francisco Sectional Championships April 28 at the CityCollege of San Francisco. Both swimmers took down times they had set at last year's sectionalmeet. Vu, a junior, posted a 52.55 in the 100 fly (previous record:53.30). His 1:57.21 in the 200 IM erased his 1:59.06 standard.Chan, a senior, took the 50 free record down to 24.72 from 24.84.She scored a second victory in the 100 free (53.94), coming within15-hundredths of the 2001 sectional mark in that event. Three of Lowell High's relays also bettered sectional standards.Lowell's girls 200 free relay squad of sophomore Alika Lew-Koga,senior Asia Azus plus juniors Kaitlin Leung and Leslie Fungcombined for a 1:44.76, taking down Lowell's 2011 time of 1:43.83.Their boys 200 medley team of freshman Matthew Kim, sophomoreBrendan McKay--with seniors Nicholas Pasquinzo and Sam Hong--puttogether a 1:43.73, 11-hundredths better than Lowell's 2010 team.Junior Dylan Westover joined Hong, Kim and Pasquinzo to eraseLowell's 2008 mark of 3:25.50 in the 400 free relay with their3:23.67. Lowell dominated the girls competition, scoring 239 points for thetitle. Washington High, with Alison Hoang's first-place 200 freeeffort of 2:03.94, came in second with 59 points. Lincoln was third(50), followed by Balboa (8). Lowell swept the girls relays with times of 1:52.75 in the 200medley and 3:56.20 in the 400 free relay. Leung was the only otherdouble-event champion with her 59.53 in the 100 fly and 2:13.61 inthe 200 IM. Senior Amanda Chow placed first in the 100 breast(1:10.62), Lew-Koga was tops in the 100 back (1:03.04) and juniorEmily Woo captured the 500 free (5:34.27). Lowell claimed a sweep of the titles with the boys first-placetotal of 197 points. Washington finished second (142), followed byLincoln (50), Galileo (39) and Wallenburg (5). Lowell enjoyed individual event wins from Pasquinzo in the 200 free(1:52.74) and Westover in the 100 breast (1:03.64). Washington junior Bryan Zhong came in first in both the 50 free(22.28) and 100 back (56.56). Zhong also swam on Washington'sfirst-place 200 free relay with seniors Calvin Luo and JeffreyPhan, plus sophomore Warren Liang (1:34.96). Individually, Luopowered his way to the 100 free win (50.05) and Phan was victoriousin the 500 free (5:13.34). Results: High School State Championships: CIF San Francisco.
