Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
Initiative by Research Councils UK in partnership with the RoyalInstitution Sailing fans are being invited to explore the research behind thesport at a free event in the run up to the Olympic Games. TheCutting Edge: Behind Sailing event on Thursday 24 May at theWeymouth and Portland Sailing Academy will feature Professor SteveHaake, double Olympic medalist Simon Hiscock, and top sportsscientists in an interactive session with demonstrations oftechnology and sport. The event will give attendees the chance to question both thescientists who develop the cutting-edge technology behind sport, and the high-achieving athletes who use it. Professor Steve Haake, one of the UK"s top sports scientists, will be joined byProfessor Glen McHale, who develops extremely water repellent hightech surfaces that can help to reduce drag in boats, and Dr JudithWolf, an expert in coastal modeling of tides and currents and thebrains behind Team GB"s gold medal at the Seoul Olympics.

DrDavid James will also take part, leading the discussion on how farresearch and new technologies should be used in the quest to wingold. For more information on the Cutting Edge 2012 series, and toregister for tickets, those interested should go to/cuttingedge2012 Professor Steve Haake, head of Sports Engineering Research atSheffield Hallam University and Chair of the event commented: "Cutting Edge is a chance for the general public to lookbehinds the scenes at what it takes to win Gold at the Olympics. Elite sport needs elite support and the Cutting Edge seriesshowcases some of the key expertise provided by the UK's academicsand practitioners helping our athletes get the competitive edgeneeded to come first. These skills include engineering, technology, physiology and psychology as well as elite athletesthemselves.

Our audiences will be encouraged to ask questions andwe will not shy away from the difficult ones - in return we mayjust ask some searching questions of the audience themselves." The Cutting Edge 2012 event series consists of six sessions intotal, all themed around a different sport, and will feature arange of sports stars and top scientists in an interactive sessionwith demonstrations. The evening events are an initiative by Research Councils UK(RCUK), and are an opportunity to question both cutting-edgeresearchers and high-achieving athletes. Comments from people attending the events will inform new researchabout the public"s attitudes to research and technology usein sport, which will be presented at the International Conventionon Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS) in July. Cutting Edge 2012 has been granted the prestigious London 2012Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme whichrecognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012Games. Formerly,Head of Research in Science & Technology at Nottingham TrentUniversity, he has a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Physics and a PhDin Applied Mathematics from the University of Nottingham.

His research has been on how liquids interact with solid surfaces -whether it be at the small scale of microfluidics or the largescale of flow across surfaces. He has an interest in materials thatalter the solid-liquid interaction, how surface structure canamplify the effects of chemistry and how natural systems use thisto gain competitive advantage within their environments. Hisresearch has been supported by the UK Engineering & PhysicalSciences Research Council (EPSRC), The Royal Society, the EU and arange of companies. He has published over 140 peer-reviewedscientific papers in addition to seven patents.

She has also been involved in marinerenewable energy, particularly tidal energy. She has over 70peer-reviewed scientific publications as well as conferenceproceeding and reports and has provided scientific leadership forvarious UK and EU projects.
