We have all had those nights where things do not go well at the bar or club and you end by yourself. You are sitting there, there isn’t much going on except for your friend making progress with the girl on the other end of the bar, and you aren’t sure if you should stay or go, so you just keep sitting there ordering beer. At the clubs and bars in Houston, and basically anywhere else you go in the country, you know you have reached a low point when the bartender slides that snack bowl in front of you. If you see one of these top three bar snacks coming your way, you know it is going to be a long lonely night for you. The bartenders almost seem to have a sixth sense about these things. They see you nursing your beer, watching your friend laughing and having a good time. That is when that bowl makes its appearance. The bartender knows you need something to do to help you pass the time, or something to gnaw on so you don’t grind your teeth down to nothing as you watch your buddy put his arm around the girl. Usually, that bowl is filled with shelled peanuts. These seem to be the ultimate snack for the loner. It gives you (okay maybe not you, but definitely me, I have been there) something to pick at while you wait. It even gives you a chance to reclaim some manliness as you ruggedly snap the peanut shell to get the nuts out and then toss the shells right on the floor. Some clubs might offer you the stale pretzel bowl. These are usually the mini pretzels that may have been sitting just a little too long in that bowl. The bartender refills the bowls out of this fifty pound bag he keeps behind the bar. The bag may have been around since the eighties. If you aren’t afraid of chipping a tooth on one of these bad boys then you can try them out. The pretzel seems like another snack of the loner. Maybe you have run through the peanuts and the pretzels and your friend now has the girl sitting on the same barstool as him across the way. It is time to turn to the true desperation snack – choosing something off that rack behind the bar. Some of those bags of snacks look like they may have dust on them and have been there since Prohibition, but by this point your stomach is groaning (either from pain or hunger, who can tell at this point) and you are willing to try anything. My only recommendation is to stay away from the beef jerky. So your friend finally winks and waves as he leaves with the girl. You can pay your tab and head home, another unsuccessful night out at the clubs and bars in Houston under your belt. Speaking of belts, you need to loosen yours and maybe see your doctor the next day. At the very least, pick up some antacids and Pepto on your way home and swear this will never happen again.
