New Zealand's government tourism agency and Australia's nationalcarrier Wednesday announced a new marketing partnership aimed atgiving New Zealand's stagnant tourism industry global marketingreach. Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) and Qantas said they had signed amemorandum of understanding to market Australia's trans-Tasmanneighbor in a deal worth 4 million NZ dollars (3.14 million U.S.dollars) over two years. Announcing the partnership at a trade event in New Zealand's SouthIsland ski resort town of Queenstown, TNZ chief executive KevinBowler and Qantas regional general manager New Zealand and PacificIslands, Rohan Garnett, said it outlined a financial commitment tojoint planning and partnership marketing in New Zealand's keytourism markets of Australia, the United States, the United Kingdomand Germany. Each party would invest 1 million NZ dollars each year from July 1this year to June 20, 2014. Garnett said Qantas had served New Zealand for more than 50 yearsand was committed to bringing international visitors through itsextensive global, Australian and trans-Tasman network. "We particularly look forward to developing the inbound tourismmarket from Australia, which underpins the close economic andcultural relationship between our two countries," said Garnett in astatement. "In the long-haul markets of the UK, U.S. and Germany, meanwhile, acombined approach will ensure New Zealand stands out in thecompetitive global tourism environment." Bowler said in the statement that the partnership marketing wouldgive TNZ greater reach and effectiveness in its campaigns bycombining funds and offering attractive offers for potentialvisitors. The TNZ-Qantas partnership would target four of New Zealand's mostsignificant visitor markets, with a primary focus on Australia, hesaid. "Qantas remains a significant airline out of the U.S., Germany andEurope and we expect this partnership to help tackle some of thechallenges we face in those markets with the high New Zealanddollar and global financial crisis," said Bowler. "Australia remains our largest source of visitor arrivals and thisagreement focuses on our core trans-Tasman market." The cooperative activity would include advertising and promotionalcampaigns, television promotional activities, and an on-linepresence and profile through each party's website. International tourism is one of New Zealand's largest earners offoreign exchange. Last year, the country hosted more than 2.6million overseas visitors, who added around 9.7 billion NZ dollarsto the nation's economy, according to TNZ. Visitors from Australia numbered almost 1.17 million in the 12months to the end of March this year. Also Wednesday, Air New Zealand and alliance partner VirginAustralia announced plans to boost capacity on the busy Auckland-Perth route by more than 20 percent in the next financial year,after Air New Zealand replaces its 234-seat Boeing 767-300 with a304-seat Boeing 777-200ER aircraft on the route. Air New Zealand group general manager Australasia Bruce Parton saidPerth was one of the airline's fastest growing routes, withdouble-digit growth in visitor arrivals over the past year. New Zealand's Ministry of Economic Development said Tuesday thatthe country's tourism industry had "a tough 12 months" in the yearto the end of March, with international visitor spending flat at5.6 billion NZ dollars (4.39 billion U.S. dollars), excludinginternational airfares, despite international visitor arrivalsrising by 4 percent in the same period.
