Preventive Hints for a Better and Safer Pest Control Approach

Home Improvement,Family & Parenting,Health
Preventing pests from intruding your home is the first step in pest control. If you discover you have an insect or rodent infestation, there really is no substitute for professional pest control. However, there are some simple and excellent guidelines to help homeowners avoid such invasions; keeping both the pests and the exterminators away.

The best way to keep pests away is to eliminate the things every living creature needs to survive: food, warmth and shelter. By keeping the outside of your home kept up and clean, you can minimize the attraction for pests. Wood piles are a haven for both rodents and bugs. Termites use them for food but most other pests use the wood piles for shelter and warmth.

Try to store your wood as far away from your house as possible. Leftover pieces of food have a strong appeal to pests as well. Make sure your garbage bags are tied shut and that you have a secure lid on your trash can. In addition, regularly washing your garbage can may also aid in keeping out ants, flies and other unwanted visitors. Finally, avoid leaving standing water out. Kids toys, holes in the concrete, and any other place water tends build up are all breeding grounds for bugs. All in all, you have a lesser chance of encountering a pest problem if you maintain clean and manicured outside areas.

Home Control

It is one thing to find pests outside your home, but finding them inside leaves you feeling even more violated. The same principles apply inside your home as outside; keep it clean. If there is a spill of some kind of drink or food, clean it up quickly and thoroughly using soapy water. In addition, regularly vacuum and mop your floors to pick up any pieces of food or sticky residues that you may not have picked up before. It is also important to store your food properly. Store food in your pantry with tight fitting lids and keep ripe fruit in the refrigerator. Fruits and vegetables are great to have around because they are so good for our health. However, when they spoil they are magnets for fruit flies, ants and other pests so be sure to throw them out once they are past their prime.

Retract the Welcome Mat

Spiders and bugs are experts in squeezing and sneaking into our homes so don't leave the welcome mat out. Seal any cracks and crevices in baseboards, moldings, cupboards, pipes, ducts, etc. with the use of silicone caulking. In addition, place screens in front the vents for your heating and cooling systems or repair any holes in existing screens. Also, replace or repairs any missing or damaged screen on your doors and windows. Finally, check on some of the more hidden areas of your house, such as the basement or attic, and make sure they are inhospitable for life. Some pests may still be able to find their way into your home but you can prevent many intrusions by following these guidelines.
