Mosaic tile pattern crafts are adjustable to be suitable for crafters of all ages and degrees of skill. Young crafters can use different colored pieces of paper, while older crafters can use actual mosaic tile or other material. The time it takes to create a mosaic tile pattern craft depends on the size and detail of the pattern. The cost of this type of project will also vary depending on the material you choose to work with. Professional painters use small books showing the variety of different paint colors they are able to provide their customers. As new paint sample books come out, painters and paint suppliers get rid of the outdated sample books. To get an old sample book, try contacting a local paint supplier. Go through the sample book and cut out the different squares of color. Once removed from the book, you can cut up the colored squares to even smaller sizes to use as mosaic tiles. Because the sample books are typically made of a heavy paper, you can easily attach them to other surfaces using craft glue or glue sticks. Using recycled paint sample books is an ideal mosaic tile craft for young kids. It allows them to use a wide variety of colors, it is safe to use, and it teaches a valuable lesson on recycling and reusing. It is also very low cost. The only supplies needed, other than the paint sample book, will be glue and card stock or poster board to glue the colored tiles on. Young crafters can also use construction paper to create mosaic tiles. Simply cut the paper into strips and then cut the strips into small squares of paper. Similarly to the paint sample books, using construction paper makes it inexpensive and safe for young crafters and a pattern is easy to make using craft glue. Using the paper, young crafters can recreate pictures in mosaic tiles. They can create a rainbow or other outdoor scene. They can also attempt to create a portrait. Once a child learns the basic concept of mosaic tile crafts, the possibilities are endless. You can also purchase mosaic tiles from craftstores. They will be made from actual tile material and will require tile glue and grout. The pattern will need to be created on a hard surface, such as wood or concrete. Cover the area with tile glue and arrange the mosaic tiles into the desired pattern. When creating a mosaic tile pattern, start at the center and work your way out toward the edges of the piece. After all the tiles are in place, cover the entire surface with the tile grout. Make sure the grout goes in between all the tiles and fills in all the gaps. Then use a warm damp rag to wipe the grout off the tile surface. Wipe away the grout while it is still wet, or it will not easily come off the tile. Wearing work gloves, place the dishes, one at a time, inside an old pillow case. Close the pillow case and hit the dish with a hammer. The dish will break into pieces, but the pillow case will keep the pieces from flying all over the room. Empty the broken pieces into a designated container and continue until all the dishes are broken. If pieces come out of the pillow case larger than you are able to use, simply use the hammer to break up the larger pieces. It is important to wear work gloves and protective glasses to do this safely. Using broken dishes will give the mosaic tile pattern more texture. It will also create a different look than one attained by using store-bought mosaic tiles because the broken dish tiles will be all different shapes and sizes. It will also take longer to put the pattern together since it will be harder to fit pieces together.
