Located on the southern coast of Portugal, it is just a short journey from the airport at Faro to Albufeira, one of the best seaside destinations on the southern coast. While it is often considered to be one of the hottest tourist destinations, thanks to its beaches and nightlife, it is also a beacon of history. There are remnants of civilisations that date back to the Neolithic period, giving you plenty to do should you want to spend an afternoon away from the sandy shores. But, even if you choose to spend every moment after travelling from Faro to Albufeira on the beaches, you would be able to travel to a different one every day for over three weeks! Regardless of whether you like the big, bustling beaches or the quiet, more isolated cove-style shores, the region has a perfect getaway for you. With 30 kilometres of coastline and roughly 25 beaches, you can choose your beach scene to match your mood while still staying within the town and soaking up the exceptional atmosphere it is known for. The central and popular beaches If the only thing on your mind as you make the short trip from Faro to Albufeira is hitting the golden beaches, then head straight down to the waterfront area that lines the old town. Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman's beach) and Praia do Túnel beaches are two of the most popular beaches in the town and are filled with tourists and beach bars. The water sports here are abundant and it's an excellent opportunity to try something new and active while on holiday. One of the most magnificent draws of Fisherman’s Beach is the fact that fishermen still use it to bring in their catches; be sure to make it down to the waterfront early one morning to watch the traditional boats come in. For those who like to be where the action is, Oura Beach is just a short walk away from the centre strip of the nightlife. Here you can rent chairs and soak in the sun in a lively atmosphere, and it is where you should head when you want to people watch too! Quieter beaches If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of people after you arrive from Faro to Albufeira, then make your way over to the stunning ochre cliffs at Falesia Beach. The long strip of white sand beach is backed by ochre cliffs, which preside over the crystal clear waters that lap the shore. You could also head to the opposite side of the town where you can find the relatively secluded Praia da Coelha, which can be reached by a footpath that leads you through olive trees. The high, rocky walls of the cliff face protect the beach and the beach itself is a mingling of rocks from the cliffs and smooth sands. While this beach may feel like a secret location, there are restaurants within walking distance and you are never too far away from the town - perfect.
