Given the tight schedule and wealth of attractions to be seen in the Catalonian capital, is there any good reason take some days off one’s schedule in order to make a trip from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar? As a powerful, important city, there are definitely many reasons to visit the capital of Catalonia: its rich history, important ruins and architecture, thriving art scene, bustling business environment and more! Lloret de Mar, on the other hand, is so small and quiet– comparing Barcelona to Lloret de Mar is just like comparing night and day! Still, there are many reasons to take a trip from the cosmopolitan to the cosy. Here are a couple of very good ones. Nature, Peaceful and Quiet The first thing that strikes many visitors coming from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar is how quiet and laid back this seafaring town is compared to the bustling city that is the Catalonian capital. The area it is in, aptly named Costa Brava or Wild Coast, is rugged and natural, with crystal clear water, coarse sand and almost unspoilt sheer cliffs, beaches, coves and inlets, as well as amazing landscapes, beautiful coastal trails, and awe-inspiring views of the sea against the sky. If you’re going as a side trip on a business conference or convention, you will find the Wild Coast a refreshing change from the pressure and stresses of the rat race. Take a long breath of the sea air, take lone walks on the trails and reconnect with yourself for a few hours, a few days– it doesn’t matter, time stands still in this stunning region. A Bit Of Heaven There’s a distinct sense of going to another world when you arrive from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar. While it seems that the nature there is enough to make you feel a connection to a very different kind of life, far from the familiar and the everyday, even the manmade constructs seem to connect you to something timeless and otherworldly. A great example of this is the Gardens of Santa Clotilde (Jardines de Santa Clotilde). Accessible either on foot or by public transportation, this breathtaking Italian Renaissance garden, between the beaches of Fenals and Cala Boadella on a picturesque coastal slope commands a magnificent view of the sea and conveys unity with nature –a characteristic feature of its creator Rubio’s work. Another garden, Pinya de Rosa, is a beautiful botanical garden that blooms all year round. Mare de Déu de Les Alegries, and the Church of Sant Romà, respectively the oldest church in the area and the Gothic church built as a refuge from attacks from Turkish and Algerian pirates, are two more attractions on the list of "must-sees". You can also pay a visit to the Modernist cemetery, the Sanctuary of Sant Pere del Bosc. Here, you'll see the Angel monument, Oratory of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, Chapel of Santa Cristina, the Chapel of Les Alegries and the Chapel of Sant Quirze. These latter two magnificent edifices were built as a testament to man’s desire to connect with the eternal. There is also Dona Marinara, the Monument to the Fisherman’s Wife, which is one of the town’s most emblematic symbols. Legend states that touching the sculpture’s foot while looking out at the horizon will make your wishes come true. Author Plate Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct.
