How To Care For A Chain Link Fence In Vancouver

Construction,Home Improvement
A chain link fence in Vancouver can be used for a number of different reasons. It can be used to help keep animals in an enclosed space, it can be used to help define property lines or it can be used to give children an outdoor space to play in and keep them out of the street or unsafe areas. However, a chain link fence can become damaged and weakened if it is not properly cared for. If it is damaged or weakened, it can easily be blown over by the wind, knocked over by a pet pushing on it or become unsafe for children to be around. This defeats the whole purpose of having a chain link fence in Vancouver. Unfortunately, most people have no idea how to care for their fence. Here are some tips that you can use to maintain yours.

1. Have the Fence Coated: As soon as the fence is installed, have it coated. Chain link fences are always composed of metal. The type of metal varies and can include aluminum, steel or iron. However, the common component is that all types of metal can rust when they are exposed to water and outdoor elements. Coating the fence helps prevent it from rusting. A coating can be either paint or a clear sealer. The coating prevents water from directly hitting the metal, thus preventing rust. It is important to note that coating and paint wears off over time. Therefore, it is important to inspect the fence and touch up or reapply the paint or coating as needed. A thin sealer will wear off in as little as two to three years, whereas a thick powder coating will last for up to 10 years.

2. Clean the Fence: Most people do not think to clean their Vancouver chain link fences. After all, they are outdoors, so they are just going to get dirty again. But cleaning the fence removes dirt, dust, oil and residue that may be sitting on the fence, eating away at the coating and metal. Removing this build up at least once or twice a year is vital. Luckily, it is not hard to clean a fence. If you have a pressure sprayer, you can use that to spray down the fence. If not, spray it down with your hose. If any build up remains, use a soft-bristled brush and soapy water to remove it. Spray the fence down once again to remove the soapy residue and then dry it with a towel. That is all that you need to do to keep it clean.

3. Repair the Fence: The last step to maintaining your fence is to repair any areas in need of repair quickly. Every three months, walk around your fence looking for signs of damage. Look for rust, corrosion, damaged or bent links or signs that the fencing is leaning. If you notice any signs of damage, call a fence Vancouver chain link fence repair company. The majority of damage can be repaired if it is caught early enough. For example, rust can be sanded off and the metal can be re-coated. However, if it is allowed to sit, it can eat away at the metal, causing a hole. That hole can't be repaired and that entire section of fencing will need to be replaced. If you don't make the repairs as needed, it is more likely that your fence will weaken and blow over in a storm, get knocked over by strong animals or rust to the point that it is unsafe to be around. Keeping up with repairs helps ensure you have a fence that is strong, safe and dependable.
