While Goa is known for is idyllic beaches and lively nightlife, those visiting this well known part of India can also make excursions to a wide variety of attractions that let you experience the rich natural heritage of the region. One such site definitely worth visiting when on holiday here is the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated in North East Goa, this sanctuary is around 38 kms from Margao and is a popular draw amongst nature lovers. The period from October to March is generally considered the best time to visit the park which also features tourist cottages that are managed by the Forest Department. Covering an area of around 8 square kilometres, this relatively small sanctuary boasts lush green landscapes and provides an idyllic escape in nature. Goa's smallest wildlife sanctuary, it has Botanic Gardens, Formal Gardens, a Deer Safari Park and a Mini Zoo which offer plenty of fun and entertainment as well as giving you a chance to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region. Moist Deciduous Forests make up most of the vegetation, while Evergreens are found here as well. Giant Lianas, Rosewood, Kindall, Saraca indica and Terninalia crenulata which is the State Tree, are among the flora that can be found in the area. Helping in the conservation process the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary has a range of wildlife including animals that have been rescued from abuse. The state animal, the Gaur can be seen at the park which is also home to such wildlife as panthers, leopards, barking deer, spotted deer, mouse deer, crocodiles, wild boars, porcupines, flying lizards and the Malabar giant squirrel. Bird watchers also have much to see since the site has more than a hundred species of birds; the common grey hornbill, woodpeckers, kingfishers and the ruby throated yellow bulbul which is the state bird, to name a few. Those in search of luxury resorts in Goa in which to unwind in and enjoy some personal pampering can stay at The Leela Goa.
