MELBOURNE, Australia -- The Essendon Bombers emphatically endedWest Coast's perfect start to the Australian Football Leagueseason, beating the undermanned Eagles 16.17 (113) to 7.10 (52) ina lopsided contest between the top two teams. The Bombers moved into second just 1 percentage behind theEagles after kicking five goals in the first 10 minutes of thethird quarter to run away with the match. Essendon's only loss thisseason came in a 1-point, last-minute defeat to Collingwood. Essendon coach James Hird said he was not getting carried away withthe win, acknowledging they played the Eagles at a good time. We went into the game understanding they had some significantinjuries and were coming off a six-day break, Hird said. But Eagles coach John Worsfold said that was no excuse. I wouldn't say they've taken a toll, I would say we got outplayedtonight, Worsfold said. Essendon looked sharper and used theball better that was the key. On Friday, the Melbourne Demons also lost their seventh in a row.Hawthorn notched consecutive victories for the first time thisseason in a 15.25 (115) to 6.13 (49) victory; the Hawks' ninthstraight win over the Demons. On Monday, St. Kilda plays a Carlton side that could also improveto 6-1 and potentially move to the top of the standings.
