We’ve still got a ways to go until St. Patrick’s Day hits with all its festivities, cheers, and kisses (wink), but if you want your garden or windowsill to be flushed with beautiful oxalis, then now is the time to plant. Oxalis Varieties Oxalis is a flowering shamrock plant that comes in many different varieties. Some of our favorites include oxali triangulars, which produce rich, purple shamrocks and dainty lavender flowers and oxalis iron cross, also known as the good luck plant, which blooms rosy blossoms and bright green shamrocks dramatically stained with deep purple hues in the center. We’re also partial to oxalis grand duchess lavender, oxalis braziliensis, oxalis regenlii and more. Whichever variety you choose, know that you’ll be getting a hardy plant that will flourish in almost all growing zones (though those living in growing zone three will need to plant indoors). Planting Oxalis Those who purchase oxalis regnelli or triangular may be surprised when they open up the box and discover a handful of pudgy sticks and undernourished pinecones. No, we promise we didn’t mess up your order, that’s just what those varieties look like (iron cross bulbs look much more conventional). Oxalis flowers in about 8 – 10 weeks, so if you want some lucky shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day, it’s time to buy some soil and some decorative pots if you’re planning on planting indoors and get to work. If you’re planting outdoors, find a location where the soil drains well (oxalis bulbs won’t survive soggy soil or standing water). Dig little holes and plant the bulbs 1” – 1.5” deep and 3” – 4” inches apart. No need to worry about which side is up, just push them into the ground and they will grow. Indoor and outdoor oxalis plants need plenty of sunlight to grow big and healthy so put them on the sunny side of your house or on a sunny windowsill. Give The Gift Of Luck Blooming oxalis plants make a wonderful gift for St. Patrick’s Day, especially if you have a loved one with a nearby birthday or are hosting a St. Patty’s event. Oxalis grows well in pots, so buying some creative and decorative pots (we suggest the color green) at your nearest home and garden store and planting oxalis now will give you beautiful and unique gifts to give to your party guests or to decorate your home or event space with for the event itself. In fact, why not do both by using the plants as decorations and then auctioning or raffling them off at the end of the event? Oxalis is often overlooked, because it doesn’t have the biggest blossoms or lushest leaves, but it truly is a beautiful and wonderful plant. It’s easy to grow and has a long life if cared for properly. It can also add a fun and authentic touch to your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
