Residents who want to enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend onGreenwich's beaches are being urged to get their beach pass soon. Parks and Recreation Director Joseph Siciliano said his department has given residents a three-week extensionthat allows them to enter the town's beaches with a 2011 pass. OnceMay 21 rolls around, however, last year's passes will no longer bevalid, and residents will need to renew for 2012. "We have extended the resident cutoff day from May 1 to May 21,"Siciliano said. "Basically, that's because we have had aslow-to-moderate return of applications. "We don't want to see anyone not be able to go to the parks on theholiday weekend because they haven't had their passes renewed." Applications were mailed to residents Feb. 3, said Siciliano, adding that the department can have them completed and back in themail with a parking sticker in no more than two business days. A bar code on residents' cards are reactivated by the town whenthey are renewed, Siciliano said. As of Friday, 14,684 applications have been processed, with 27,275passes issued, Siciliano said. The higher number of passes isbecause multiple people live at one mailing address. Siciliano said 39,000 passes were issued last year. "The expectation is that by May 21, the residents will have a valid2012 park pass," he said. "We are encouraging residents to get themin the mail soon so we can reactivate their cards." The season ends Oct. 31. This isn't the first year the department has given residents extratime to complete their application. "What generally happens is that it lingers," he said aboutresidents waiting to complete their applications. "Each year, wehave provided some kind of grace period for folks, but our goal isto get it done by the Memorial Day weekend." Residents age 16 to 64 are charged $30 for a season pass; $5 forthose age 5 to 15. Nonresidents are charged $5 for a day pass. A daily parking passfor nonresidents is $20. Passes are available at the Greenwich Civic Center , 90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven daysa week and at Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road, Monday throughFriday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Western Greenwich Civic Center, 449 Pemberwick Road, will openon the Memorial Day weekend for the sale of passes, and will beopen on weekends and all holidays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sicilianosaid. Residents who expect to go to Town Hall, complete theirapplications and get their renewals that day will be disappointed,Siciliano said. "They have this thought that if they come in, person they will beable to flip it right at the counter, and we don't do that. Part ofus mailing you your information is proof that you live at thatlocation," Siciliano said. "We will take your application at thecounter at Town Hall, but we will not fully process them that day." frank.maceachern@scni.com; 203-625-4434.
