Patrolman Steven Summerer was named Officer of the Year. In 2010 the department determined that only one officer wouldbe assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit and as the School ResourceOfficer (SRO), according to Acting Police Chief John McGuinness.Summerer accepted this position knowing that he would be requiredto maintain the responsibilities the SRO and Crime Prevention Unitdemands. As the SRO, Summerer is dedicated to the Frelinghuysen School fromSeptember until June. This detail has grown from instructingthe Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) curriculum to thesixth grade students to a program that now provides programs to theentire student population.

Summerer also works with students for mentoring, bullying and gangawareness and Alive @25, a drinking g and driving program. Perhaps the single most compelling reason to nominate PatrolmanSummerer for the Officer of the Year Award is because of theinvaluable resource he has become, McGuinness said. Wheneverthere is an issue with a member of our student population, Patrolman Summerer is our first point of contact to resolve thematter or gather intelligence. Honorable Service Awards Sgt. Stanley Witczak- was given a Honorable Service Award.

On Jan. 1, a woman reported to the Chatham Township PoliceDepartment that she was sexually assaulted by the driver of atransportation service, McGuiness noted. The victim said she was threatened by the suspect with a firearm ifshe called the police. Several police information bulletins werereviewed by Sgt.

Witczak that described the suspect and the vehiclehe was operating. Eighteen day days after the incident, Sgt. Witczak observed avehicle on East Hanover Avenue that fit the description of thewanted bulletin. The vehicle was stopped and the company that ownedthe vehicle was identified.

With this information, a suspect wasidentified who was attempting to flee the county. The suspect was charged with the Chatham sexual assault andanother sexual assault in Sussex County. Patrolman Steven Crump was given an Honorable Service Award. In 2011, Crump was the leader in the agency for driving whileintoxicated (DWI) arrests.

. Crump made 23 DWI arrests whichrepresents 21 percent of the total number of arrests made bythe department. This is the second consecutive year that Crump will receive theMothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) award. Patrolman Clay Boeninghaus received a letter of recognition.

On Jan. 20 Boeninghaus conducted a motor vehicle stop of avehicle travelling southbound on Interstate Route 287 for anequipment violation. The vehicle was occupied by two men who were driving fromupstate New York to central New Jersey. Because of his training, experience and interview techniquesinvolving criminal interdiction Boeninghaus recognized numerousindicators that are commonly associated with drug couriers.

During the investigation he obtained consent to search the vehiclefrom the driver. As a result of the search he located a hidden compartment in thecargo area that contained 3.5 pounds of marijuana. The suspects stated they purchased the marijuana for $14,000 in NewYork State and planned to sell the drug in New Jersey for$28,000 in street value. Boeninghaus was commended for his keen sense of awareness by beingalert for the subtle clues he observed as well as making asignificant seizure of marijuana ultimately keeping the drugs offthe streets. His dedication and professionalism brings credit to the MorrisTownship Police Department, according to McGuinness.
