Various Types of Planting Turf Grass

Family & Parenting
The customary ways of planting turf grass takes long and are subject to risks. Laying sods and broadcasting dry seeds are the two main traditional methods of planting lawn grass. The use of sods is the most used method and the most laborious one. The method involves cutting carpet like rolls of sods into easy to handle sizes that is just right to cover particular areas.

A bare front yard or backyard garden area need to be prepared before laying the sods. The soil must be loosened, boulders and debris must be removed, and fertilizers should be applied beforehand. The soil must also be kept constantly moist. Laying sods on inclined or uneven areas and irregularly shaped areas such as the soil surrounding a tree may be diffIcult.

Sods also need to be meticulously cared for prior to and after they are laid on the soil. It is important that the sods are kept moist while waiting to be planted so that they do not wilt and eventually die. There is also the need to plant them during an ideal "window" period wherein the weather is not too hot, too cold or too wet. Otherwise, they are likely to die from the harsh weather conditions.

Turf grass in sod forms which are commercially available are sprouted in greenhouses which are controlled environments and they are later transplanted in outdoor turf farms or fields. The risks of being contaminated with disease-causing germs, parasites and weeds are high relatively high in these fields. As a result, there is a risk that the germs, parasites and weeds will likewise be brought to the gardens or yards where sods will be planted. This can eventually cause serious infestations that can potentially destroy other plants within the vicinity.

The occurrence of weed and parasitic infestations is reduced when dry seed broadcasting method is used. Dry turf seeds also have longer shelf life, making it convenient to choose the best date for planting. Unlike using sods, there is no need to worry about withering or keeping moisture level constant. However, there is still the need for extensive preparation of the soil. Broadcasting dry seeds is also not very precise. And because of uneven distribution and germination rate the turf grass growth may not be balanced. There is also the risk of erosion or the seeds being carried as runoffs if there is heavy rain. The seeds may also die and rot before even having the chance to sprout.

Rapidly gaining popularity as an alternative method of planting turfs is the process of hydroseeding. It is a bit more expensive in terms of per square or square meter use. However, it is still cost-effective in the long term. It is also cost-effective in terms of labor and time that can be saved. As its name suggests, this method makes use of a slurry of mulch, turf seeds, organic coloring, fertilizer, mulch and water.

This method makes use of a slurry tank, pump, and hose. Since the slurry is highly fluid, they can be applied with greater precision. Applying it on sloping and uneven terrains is easier. They can be applied with ease even on areas that cannot be accessed easily. The mulch ensures that water and nutrients are retained. The seeds then sprout in a protected environment and with enough moisture and nutrition.
