Plastic surgery is almost always performed to heighten one’s physical appearance. From simple correction of lesions to changing the appearance of vital body parts; plastic surgeries are performed for a number of reasons. Although surgery has come a long way from what it was a few decades earlier; it is still far from perfect. Although not every surgery is going to cause problems, they can never be termed as being totally safe. These complications can be varied and of different intensity, and once they happen; they can range from being a source of embarrassment to life threatening. What are the possible complications of plastic surgery? These are entirely related to the nature of surgery opted for. Having said this; even though the surgery can be about anything, there are still a few common complications that can arise from these procedures. A few of the important ones are listed here: Nausea and vomiting One very common offshoot of almost every surgery is nausea. Giddiness and vomiting are common. Once the surgery has been performed, the areas on which it is done are prone to pain that takes a long time to subside. Problems associated with the blood In many patients,surgery can also result in loss of blood. Bleeding is to be expected of almost any plastic surgery. If it goes on unabated; excessive blood loss can lead all the way to brain damage. Blood can also collect at the site of the surgery, in a condition known as hematoma. Plastic surgery can also result in collection of body fluids, or what is known as seroma. In many cases, another surgery is needed to just stop these conditions. Another associated complication of plastic surgery is blood clotting. Even this has to be taken seriously, because this can result in its own set of complications. Infections Even with the best methods; surgery is almost certain to cause infection. This is because surgery involves making very drastic alterations into the body, which goes against the grain of nature’s creation. When scalpels enter the system, they are not readily accepted, leading sometimes to infection of varied kinds. Destruction of healthy tissues Plastic surgery can also cause death of good, or what are called healthy tissues. In an action similar to chemotherapy which destroys both malignant and healthy cells; plastic surgery can inadvertently destroy the tissues that our body needs for healthy functioning. These tissues take a lot of time to repair. In many cases, they don’t at all. Blood pressure variations Yet another complication of surgery is extreme drop or spike in blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate and pulse rate. These could become complications in themselves, especially when the patient develops these fluctuations on the operating table. Before opting for a plastic surgery, a patient is best advised to consider the darker side of these procedures.
