GERD, or gastro esophageal reflux disease, is when acid reflux occurs at an alarming and debilitating rate. Acid reflux strikes when the contents of one’s stomach, such as stomach acid or vile, rise upwards into the esophagus due to a weakening of the LES (or lower esophageal sphincter). The LES acts as a natural valve within the esophagus that is meant to close and prevent the stomach contents from rising back up. - Non- Erosive: - The non-erosive form of GERD does not display the same physical traits of erosive GERD, yet the patients experience the same symptoms. This is actually the most common form of GERD and is known as NERD, or non-erosive reflux disease. Medical experts now believe that NERD is not related to acid reflux, as the treatment for excess stomach acid fails to cure the patient of this affliction.
- Barrett’s Esophagus: - Patients with GERD should seek out medical treatment, as the condition may potentially lead to Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is more likely to occur in those with GERD and is when the lining of the esophagus becomes similar to that of the intestines. This should be treated due to a rare, but small chance of Barrett’s disease developing into a fatal form of cancer within the esophagus.
