Getting the most out of your home theater system isn’t complicated at all. It all falls into 3 main categories: Connections, placement, and equalizing sound. The better all three are, the better it will sound as a whole. Connections are items like RCA cables, HDMI cables, speaker cables, or other cables. The cables carry the information from one device to the other. It is an electrical item, granted, it carries no voltage, but still carries electrical signals; therefore, the cables need to be high conducting so they will carry easier. A general rule is to use gold. It is more expensive however, it is the best conductor for a sound system. Placement is the most critical of all three. Placing the speakers where they should be for the best acoustic delivery. If the speakers are close together or in the wrong places, the sound from the speakers will not reflect the picture or the sound as it is supposed to be. If the home theater system is 4.1, 5.1, or even 7.1 (4, 5, or 7 speakers to one person) then the speakers should be placed properly to surround the viewer. In a standard theater 5.1 setup you will have a subwoofer, center channel, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear. This will surround the person in sound and the sounds will travel from front to back or side to side in sync with the music or video. Equalizing sound is very important in the whole picture. When you have everything at the same volume the acoustics are not set up correctly. It will be loud but still won’t sound right. Equalizing the sound means to have all of the speakers the same volume in relation to the others, if the rear speakers are too loud they drown out the front, same with the front to the rear or any other combination. When you can hear all of the speakers at the same time from all of the different directions, without any of them overpowering others, the sound is equalized. This doesn’t mean that all of the speakers are the same volume, it means they are all working in conjunction with each other - this in turn will allow you to have the best sound possible. When a home theater is purchased, it is very important to get the system that meets the needs of the room. If it is a smaller room, then a lower power theater system is more practical. A cinema sized room would need a higher quality and higher power system. You can always turn a system down, but if you haven’t set it up correctly it won’t sound as good when you give it a good blast.
