Injection Molding Process is an industrialized process for producing parts from plastic materials. Material is fed into a heated drum, assorted, and forced into a mold cavity where it cools and solidifies to the design of the cavity. Injection molding is extensively used for manufacturing a range of parts, from the smallest piece to entire body panel of automobiles. The crucial factor contributing to the entire process is the mold designed by the mold maker and that decides how the final output will look like. It becomes an important process because about 30% of the produced plastic products are manufactured by using the injection molding process. The injection molding machine is made up of 3 parts, the mold, the clamping unit and the injection unit. The mold is first clamped while the melted plastic is injected through the mold. The mold is being held under pressure while the molten plastic is cooling. As the plastic flows through the mold and machine parts, there is loss of pressure due to the friction and thus the flow of the plastic is affected. As and when the molten plastic touches the surface walls of the machine and the mold its viscosity increases as it gets cooler and cooler. This in turn requires additional effort to ensure that the molten plastic flows completely into the mold from the machine. As and when the molten plastic sticks to the walls of the machine and the mold, the circumference of the plastic flow is reduced considerably. This is another reason which contributes in the pressure drop. Hetero Cavity System is the molding machine has a restricted maximum amount of pressure available to press on the screw and set injection speed. Thus it implies clearly that the required pressure to push on the screw and set injection speed should not be more than the pressure that is available in maximum limits. Thus the entire procedure of injection molding in this case becomes pressure sensitive. It is thus of crucial importance to determine the loss of plastic pressure during the entire procedure in order to modify the mold and ensure a better and consistent flow of the molten plastic. The plastic pressure drop is noted in every section of the injection machine along with noting the sections where the pressure drops are high. Ideally this pressure drop should be uniform from the plastic injection till the last point of the process. If there is a mistake in the calculations of the pressure drop readings then there will be inadequacies in the modifications of the mold accordingly. This will affect the final product or the output and cater to a poorly manufactured finished item. In order to avoid all these consequences, it is very important to determine and keep a track of the drop in pressure levels at every stage of the injection molding process. A perfectly finished plastic product is a combination of accurate calculations during the injection molding procedure and relevant modifications in the mold.
