Plastic surgery, following the advancement of the field, has come to occupy center stage of many people's lives. It is but human to look good, and we are all narcissistic in varying degrees. If a small but embarrassing flaw that we carried all our lives could be corrected in an hour or so, who wouldn't like to jump at the idea? Despite the many drawbacks and side effects of plastic surgery, surgery is one area that seems to be growing at an unstoppable pace. First report of its kind That plastic surgery is on the rise all over the world was never in doubt. Yet, till recently, there were no concrete figures to suggest a perceivable global trend in the field. This shortfall was fulfilled in 2010, with the publication of a comprehensive, worldwide report by The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). Compiled after a year of exhaustive research concerning leading plastic surgeons in 25 countries; ISAPS' report presents a mixed bag whose results surprised many. The US leads, but only in numbers One of the outstanding points of the report is that the US leads the world in plastic surgery, but only in terms of absolute numbers. It has a high figure no doubt, but is not so high in terms of per capita or density of surgery. The second of these is the more important yardstick, as it is a more accurate indicator of the proportion of people that spend on surgery. Leaders by per capita rating So, which are the leading countries of the world in terms of rate or per capita surgeries? One of the leading Southeast Asian economies, South Korea, is the world's leader. With well over a third of a million plastic surgeries for a population of around 50 million, it is the world's leader in terms of density. The second country in terms of density turned out to be a bit of a shocker to the researchers: Greece! Who would have expected people living in a nearly devastated economy to be among the chart leaders? Other countries that have a high rate of plastic surgery and are placed ahead of the US are Italy, Brazil and Colombia. Leading countries by numbers Talking about actual numbers, the US, as we saw, is the world's leader. This is how the list reads: US, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, Japan and South Korea, the top seven countries. The most popular types of plastic surgery people underwent are liposuction, followed by breast augmentation and then, eyelid surgery. Further, among these top procedures worldwide, China topped for breast augmentation and eyelid surgery, while the maximum number of people undergoing liposuction are from the US.
