There is help when one knows what can regulate or stabilize the blood sugar. The type of sugar in your blood is glucose and comes from carbohydrate foods. There are two forms: starch and sugar. Starch, which is a complex carbohydrate, is found in foods such as grains (bread, cereal, pasta, flour), legumes and vegetables. Sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate, is found in foods such as fruits (and juices), milk, honey, candy and desserts. Carbohydrates are essential nutrients for the body and especially for the brain and nervous system, however the source of the carbohydrates is essential for providing stable blood sugar and not promoting diabetes or pre-diabetes. Blood sugar levels increase slightly after eating, causing the pancreas to release a hormone called insulin to regulate the blood glucose level so that it doesn’t go to high. When these levels remain high over an extended period of time, there can be damage to one’s eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. When sugar addiction runs the food choices, it’s time to find a way to slay the sugar dragon. Naturally there are three substances that are excellent in regulating the blood glucose levels, controlling the hunger, and reducing the risk for certain diseases. The fastest way to get a grip on the cravings is to eat a few raw almonds, which has been found to have a neutralizing effect on sugar spikes. When the dragon rears his ugly head, take three or four almonds, chew well before swallowing. During this time, set a timer for 15 minutes. Make an agreement that for these 15 minutes, you will choose will power over the craving. Many times, the blood sugar is leveling out, and realistic choices in food selections can be made. Often times, one forgets they were hungry and remains happily occupied with whatever activity they were enjoying. The next item to consider as a staple in the kitchen is cinnamon. Not only does it takes great but it has an impact on rising blood sugars due to the bioactive compounds found in the scrumptious spice. One can add it to foods or take a supplement to help control blood sugar levels. The third aid is chromium, an essential element that is critical to healthy glucose metabolism. It works by interacting with cellular receptors to enhance one’s response to insulin. Many people choose to supplement with chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate, taking one dose in the morning and one in the evening. It is dosed in micrograms (mcg), however, check with your health professional to determine the level you might need. Whatever your health concerns, blood sugar levels affect all functions of one’s body. When keeping a watch on these, one can increase their overall health. Slowing or reversing the possibilities of blood sugar spikes and slaying the sugar dragon can be aided by using foods and natural remedies.
