David Rafferty has represented the people of Old Greenwich for several years nowas the head of the neighborhood association. Now, Rafferty wants tocontinue speaking on behalf of Greenwich residents, but from aperch in the state House. The 50-year-old Old Greenwich resident announced Monday that he isseeking the Democratic nomination to unseat two-term incumbent Rep. Alfred Camillo in the 151st District. "It is about talking the talk and walking the walk," Rafferty saidabout his move to electoral politics from community volunteerism."I have said it to my own kids and kids that I have worked with, that your actions speak so much louder than your words." Rafferty said he wants to be in the middle of where decisions aremade in the state Legislature. "I have had a lot of experience working with people, trying toagitate on behalf of people," he said. "But that can only go sofar. This is about taking action, representing the people by doingit from Hartford." The nomination is scheduled for Thursday in the Town Hall MeetingRoom, where Democrats will also nominate a candidate for the 150th District during their Democratic Town Committee meeting. Though he has his sights set on Camillo's seat, Rafferty heapedpraise on the incumbent. "I know him very well," Rafferty said. "We have a fantasticrelationship. I think he is a fantastic person." Rafferty said the election is about different viewpoints and ideas, not personalities. "It gives people an opportunity to see things in different ways,"he said. "It gives them the opportunity to pick and choose the waythey want to see things done." Rafferty, who is in his fifth term as president of the Old Greenwich Association , also has served on the PTA at the International School at Dundee and currently at Eastern Middle School . He is a member of the Greenwich Lions Club and a volunteer baseball and soccer coach in town. Camillo said he knows Rafferty and his family, of whom he spokehighly. "I like him and I know his son pretty well from umpiring games, whoI think the world of," Camillo said. "They are a very nice family." Rafferty is a former marketing executive, who works as a seniorstaffer at Raquette Lake Boys Camp in New York. He and his wife,Barri, have two children Aidan, 17, and Morgan, 13. Camillo was first elected in 2008, and was re-elected in 2010. He and Democrat Edward Krumeich faced off in 2008 for the district that Republican Claudia "Dolly"Powers had represented. Krumeich lost to her by 132 votes in 2006. In 2010, Camillo vanquished Democratic challenger Claude Johnson , 5,342 to 2,977. The 151st District is centered on Cos Cob, and includes northernparts of Old Greenwich and Riverside and a portion of themidcountry. Republican Town Committee Chairman Jim Campbell said Camillo's winning streak will continue. "Fred not only does an excellent job in Hartford, but he listens toeveryone in his district and he is a terrific public servant,"Campbell said. "I expect that he will be re-elected easily inNovember." Campbell's Democratic counterpart, Frank Farricker , is optimistic about his candidate. "Fred been there for two terms and he's an established presence inthe community, but so is David," Farricker said. "He has deep rootsand people know him and trust him." Voters who don't know Rafferty will soon find he shares theirconcerns about the community, Farricker added. frank.maceachern@scni.com; 203-625-4434.
