Demystifying the notions of the Civil Services examination, civilservants and their role in the society, Chief Secretary K.Jayakumar said here on Tuesday that the Civil Services was not justa glamorous job, but a responsible post meant for serving thepeople. "The Civil Services is not just a high-status job. It is ajob that is basically meant for bringing the services of thegovernment to the common people, and a channel between thegovernment and the people," he told students during aninteraction programme held at the Jawahar Balabhavan here as partof its vacation class programme. Balabhavan principal S. Malini introduced the chief guest, and K.Muraleedharan, MLA, presided. Talking about his career Mr. Jayakumar said that he initiallywanted to become a teacher, but later decided to shift to CivilServices. "While doing my MA in Nagpur, I was inspired by asenior who cracked the Civil Services examination. Later, I cameback to Kerala and worked as a teacher for some time and thendecided to prepare for the Civil Service examination and here Iam,' he said. Mr. Jayakumar said that there was no short cut to success and onlyhard work and confidence would pay at the end. He said that hepassed the Civil Services examination in the second attempt, aftershutting out from the world and focusing totally on studies forfour months. "Focus and concentration are two most important things instudent life. Not only studies, children should also focus in otheractivities and artistic pursuits," he said. He added that there was a misconception among many parents thatallowing their wards to pursue their artistic skills or interestswould affect their studies. "On the contrary, children whoare good at one field, whether art or literature, generally performwell in academics. A good artist will always be a goodstudent," he said. In the hour-longinteraction with students, he also shared his personal interests.He said that his favourite musical instrument was the sitar. Sincehe was not much of a foodie, he did not have any particularfavourites in this category. Asked what he intended to do post retirement, Mr. Jayakumar saidthat after retirement he would live life at his will and withoutany care in the world. "In a way I will really start livingmy life to the fullest after retirement. I will do everything Ilove to do and say everything that I feel like saying. I will alsopursue all my interests which I could not so far because of myofficial obligations," he said.
