Slate tile is a favorite flooring material for many builders and homeowners. It's good-looking, durable and easy to install. Since slate tiles come in 12-by-12-inch sizes and larger, labor time is reduced, and an area can be covered fairly quickly. While slate works well with most flooring applications, be more selective about which slate you use in wet areas like showers. The slate tile you select for the bath must be water-durable and not slippery when wet. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the wall lengths to find the midpoints of all four stone walls, using a tape measure. Mark the midpoints with a pencil and use a chalk box to snap lines. Divide the floor and walls into four equal sections. Take the time to prepare and lay out the floor and walls to save time when you start laying the tile. Secondly, lay loose tiles along the snapped lines in one quarter of the floor. Use tile spacers and count and measure for the number of tiles needed. Get an idea how much cutting you will do. Adjust the joint widths to make up the distance to the wall, if you come up with extra space narrower than half a tile. Thirdly, install 1/2-inch, waterproof backer board on the walls. Use Teflon-coated shank screws every six inches. Screw straight through the backer board into the wall studs, using a screwdriver. Fourthly, tape the joints with fiberglass tape. Apply mastic to cover all the tape joints. Use your trowel to get smooth, wide joint coverage. Do not be concerned with getting a slate tiles. Allow the grout to set for two to four hours, then wipe clean with a damp sponge. Repeat the sponging as needed. Let the slate sit for 36 to 48 hours and up to 72 hours. Tips & Warnings Consult the tile merchant about whether to apply a sealant to the slate, since some slates do not take sealant well. This is a challenging project. If you have never run a tile saw, or laid tile, hire a professional who will work alongside you.
