Dear friends, do you know how to cut holes in slate in the daily life? As we know, slate finds many uses from roofing tile to kitchen countertops. Slate is a natural stone that offers a similar warmth and appearance as granite or stone. Unlike granite or stone, slate is less difficult to work with in most instances. The tiles are cut to size with a device similar to a paper cutter. Drilling or cutting holes in slate is necessary for nails on roofing tiles or faucets in a countertop. When cutting holes in slate, it is important to let your tools do the work. Forcing your way through slate only cause it to break and chip. Instructions as follows: Firstly, place a light pencil mark on the back side of the slate where you want the hole. Drilling through the back to the front, gives a nice chip on the surface for countersinking screws. Secondly, insert a masonry bit that is the same diameter as the screw you want to use into your variable speed drill. Hold the drill straight with the tip of the bit on your mark. Thirdly, position the slate over a board, if drilling through slate tiles. If drilling thick slate, such as a soapstone slab, place the slate on saw horses with the drill marks close to one of the saw horses. Fourthly, start drilling the hole at a low speed while maintaining slight pressure on the drill. Allow the drill bit to cut through the slate without forcing the bit through the slate. Drill at a medium speed once the drill bit digs into the surface of the slate. Allow the bit to do the work. Fifthly, insert a carbide tipped hole saw into your drill, if you are drilling holes greater than a 1/2 inch. When using a hole saw to drill through thick slate, it is necessary to drill on both sides of the slate. Sixthly, place the drill bit tip of the hole saw into the pilot hole and begin drilling at a low speed. Allow the hole saw to cut through the slate. Once you are half way through the slate, release the power trigger on the drill and pull the hole saw from the slate. Seventhly, turn the slate over and finish drilling the hole from the opposite side. Tips & Warnings If making holes for nails on slate roof tile, tap the back of the tile with the point of a slate hammer to break a hole into the tile. The front side of the tile will chip for a nice counter kitchen sink for your roofing nails. Finally, let me have a conclusion.
