Psalm 62 reads as follows from the New King James version of the Bible: 1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. 2 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. 3 How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence. 4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly. Selah 5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah 9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor. 10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. 11 God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. 12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work While this is the New King James version of the psalm in the New Oxford Annotated Bible, verse 4 says, “ their only plan it to bring down the person of prominence, they take pleasure in falsehood, they bless with their mouths but inwardly they curse This psalm is contrasting such an approach with trusting in the Lord and consulting him with regards to plans and the way to go. These misguided people did have talent but not trust, they were able to apply that to sweet talking others while at the same time planning to in some way snatch away their goods. That the ways depicted in this psalm apply to present day happenings is obvious in some of the schemes that are uncovered and published and publicized in the media. There is always someone offering a “ deal” and in many cases it is of a dubious nature. But there approach in doing this is not only as insult to others but they wrong approach for themselves. From the point of view of many, it seems like to get somewhere there is an invisible wall that they just can’t get past. If one or two things could happen, if they could bring down the wall, or metaphorically walk through it, then they would be in the inner circle of the haves as opposed to not having. The schemers are like a leaning wall that will fall according to this psalm. That David the psalmist uses this description means that he may have seen that society seemed to be constructed that way, where there were barriers, perceived as like walls that people perceived that they needed to get around to get anywhere. In that era, small cities were fortified by actual walls as protection from potential enemies. But in terms of commerce, there might also have been the perception of walls as barriers against and then people would end up making plans to get around the barriers. The irony would be that, according to this psalm, they themselves would become like leaning walls in doing this. The idea then would be that walls and the perception of walls needed to be let go on. And as this psalm states, the right approach it to pour out your heart one on one with the Lord at all times, and this could happen in reality and this would not be walled off and there would be no walls or barriers to doing this and coming into this type of relationship with the Lord. There was the metaphor of walls for those who were self reliant in making dubious plans to scheme obvious targets of wealth while using flattery and smooth talking to mask their true intentions to do this. As it says in verse 10, this was a vain hope in a type of robbery, and also even if wealth was obtained through proper measures, it would be a mistake to bring the focus to the wealth and away from trusting the Lord and pouring your heart out to him. The people who were doing this robbery where involved in a form of evil, but also it was a mistake on their part of being misguided in their own ways, of making plans, forming strategies and making decisions which went as they say poof or just disappeared into nothingness. The plans, any good plans, would strictly come about through the mechanisms of verse 8 which says” Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah This is a type of prayer that is often less formal and more personal and unique to the one who is praying. You are bring your own unique plans, petitions, ideas, circumstances, wants and needs to the Lord in the prayer of the heart. This prayer is one of an ongoing nature, even as forming plans, and new ideas for you life are of an ongoing nature, all of which should be brought into consultation with the Lord as you let go of barriers in the context of prayer and consultation with the Lord. All good plans would only revolve firstly and lastly around this approach. The reason for this is given in verse 10 and 11 which say, God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. 12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work The power and the mercy belong to the Lord and this is the reason that undue trust put elsewhere is bad planning. Going to much to other sources, whether it be over reliance on one’s own devices or looking too much towards others that seemingly have it made, is the wrong approach in making and the conception of plans. In verse 9 it says, Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor People were looking too much to the situation of others in making plans, either in trying to emulate them, or more so to outright steal away from their spots on the hill. But where they were high status or low status, there was no strong weight or measure to the idea of going to them for profound help and guidance in the making of plans and personal strategies. Lighter than vapor on the scale is not too much to count on, as the road to find and follow. That what these people actually had would be a help was in the greater part an illusion or actual mirage, it may have seemed that way, that that were holding something that was hard to get to, but on closer inspection they were neither the real holders of the power, or as this psalm says the mercy which means the compassionate divvying or apportionment of the power. Even if these people had some mercy and compassion, they didn't also have the power to bring about the effects of the mercy. If they actually had power, it was only derived from their own stand alone relationship with the Lord as described in verse 8 of this psalm. This psalm is saying that good plans involve getting along and into a relationship of prayer and fellowship with the Lord and planned needs to first revolve around that even as the sun earth revolves around the sun. It is contrasting out those who did not do this mentioned in the verse 4. In verse 5 it says, My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. The making of plans, with the hope and expectations of real good results, comes from this type of relationship of consulting the Lord and waiting expectantly in his presence, something along the lines of sitting in an empty church alone with the Lord might be one way of doing this in present times,as you isolate to the one on one presence with the Lord. This is the way to go, and while the mirages or illusions are that others have the power, a closer inspection will show that they do not have effectual power and when David is talking about scales in the later verses of this psalm, he is really talking about the closer look or inspection as to the reality of what others situations contain, which is ultimately more so limited and will not help your plans to any great degree. While this may not seem to be the case from the distance, a closer look and inspection will reveal this and there is no need to actually take this closer look as this psalm is already saying what will be found in this closer look. The barriers to break down are not the barriers to finding out what these people have, but what the Lord has for you found in the context of the relationship of seeking and finding on a personal level. Good plans come from personal consultation with the Lord and the invitation towards this contains no walls or barriers as this psalm says to pour out your heart before him which means the offer to do this is ongoing and unlimited.
