Derived from the term "Diya Haluma" which means "rapid fall of water" in Sinhala, Diyaluma falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Sri Lanka that is enrobed in a profusion of fascinating myths and folklore. The most famous of such stories is perhaps the tragic tale surrounding the myth involving a young king who fell in love with a beautiful woman of a low cast. It is said that the tears that the king shed at seeing his beloved fall down the cliff as the couple were fleeing from enraged subjects is what flows today so mournfully as the Diyaluma falls. Standing 171m high as the third highest waterfall in this paradise isle of Sri Lanka, Diyaluma cascades in its full glory down to the picturesque Koslanda Plateau creating a large pool of frothy water. Numerous mini falls at the top of the main fall can be discovered by the curious wanderer as well as many rock pools ideal for a swim if one dares climb up the cliff. The Diyaluma Falls is fed by the Punagala Oya, a tributary of Kuda Oya which is in turn a tributary of Kirindi Oya. The stream of water falling down the cliff is fairly thin and yet after a heavy downpour, the sight becomes quite spectacular. Located along the Koslande - Welawaya road in the Badulla District, the falls are usually visible from the Koslande highway if not hindered by frequent landslides that occur in this area. The area surrounding the falls is rich in biodiversity and is home to many varieties of endemic plants and animals. The atmosphere itself is cool and inviting as the gentle breeze slowly lulls the visitors to a welcome tranquillity that is sure to sooth one's senses. The Diyaluma Falls is indeed a sight for sore eyes and is worthy of every bit of praise that has ever been sung of its beauty.
