Plastic surgery is different from a regular surgery in many ways. A surgery following an accident may be done to save a life, in which case the patient may not have a big choice. On the other hand, a plastic surgery is normally done on the person’s own volition, and is usually a matter of choice. Another name for plastic surgery is reconstructive surgery. As the two terms suggest, it is done to restore or alter some part of the body. Essentially cosmetic in nature; these procedures are carried out on one’s own will to supplement one’s beauty, although many plastic surgeries could be done to improve the function of the affected body part. Long history Although plastic surgeries are quite a craze in the west, they are quite popular in other parts of the world, too. In fact, India is credited with being the country that gave the world the concept of plastic surgery. Sushruta, a famous surgeon of ancient India, is said to have carried out plastic surgery procedures in the 6th century BC. The methods he used spread to other parts of the world, and were continued in his native country too for many centuries. The basic idea was to have healthy tissues from other parts of the body removed and stitched on the affected part. Till very recently, plastic surgeries used to be based on the same methods, until the invention of artificial substances that prevented the need for removing other body parts. Plastic surgeries are done on a number of places in the body. Today, millions of plastic surgeries are carried out all over the world, with the US being the leader in terms of numbers.
