Which Mobile-Ready Website Design is Best?

Website Design
Responsive web design has become a hot topic among designers and developers, with a debate over its benefits ongoing. As the debate continues, the question repeatedly asked is which type of mobile-ready website is the best to use. Is there an option that works best? There are many responsive designs available that work quite well, although a considerable redesign effort may be needed. Developers point out that there are multiple ways besides responsive design to make a website mobile-ready. The question that is then asked is which one is better?

Different Types

There are three categories of mobile websites that developers prefer and they are listed as follows:

  • Dedicated Mobile Site – This is a completely different version that is made specifically to view on a hand-held device. The main advantage of any dedicated mobile website is that it loads very fast and usually has optimized performance and navigation. The disadvantages are also significant as it requires a designer to create a separate website for each different device, each with separate URLs.

  • Responsive Website Design (RWD) – This is a design in which the layout is built on a fluid, grid-style format that allows the content to reformat itself depending on the accessing device. Advantages include the ability to provide the same content regardless of the device as well as having only one URL since it is the same site for all devices. Cons include a slower loading time as content is not specifically optimized for mobile use as well as navigation that is sometimes less than effective.

  • Responsive Design + Server Side Components (RESS) - Implemented within a responsive design, this is a second set of mobile-optimized code directed from the server side to hand-held devices that controls website behavior and performance. Essentially, RESS is a design that is responsive; however, instead of it being one set of code, it is code within code. This provides optimized code and site elements as well as different directives for a hand-held device than for a desktop or laptop device, creating better performance. The pros are that it is the best of both worlds. The cons with RESS are that it requires reliable detection of mobile devices and it does increase server load considerably.

    Which One is Best?

The answer to this question is going to be different for every website as depending on specific goals and needs, it could be any of the above. Where speed is a primary concern, dedicated versions win over the rest, hands down, as long as having a separate URL is not a problem. Responsive design is definitely best where presentation is concerned as it is so flexible; however, it comes with a heaviness of code written for desktop.

RESS seems to combine the benefits of both methods for the best end result - a mobile site that is not bloated with code more suitable for the desktop; this makes it fast while still incorporating responsive design. The main disadvantage is that the code is considerably more involved. Putting any complexity aside, for those who want a mobile site that performs flawlessly and seems to think on its own, RESS could be the answer at least when the right device can be detected.

There are always going to be advantages and disadvantages to every way of creating a mobile-ready website, at least as long as the responsive controversy continues. In the end, the best technique will depend on the goals of a website and how it will be used, since the importance of site behavior lies here. Trying each type may be an option to see which style gives the best results. At the very least, it will still be true that using one of these methods is better than not offering a mobile-friendly website version at all!
