Rugby fans, like all sports fans, love to wear the colours of their favourite team. And, as with all sports, success brings a greater following. The most popular rugby jerseys, therefore, are those of the most successful sides. There is no doubt that, around the world, the most instantly recognisable rugby jersey is that of the World Champion New Zealand All Blacks. In New Zealand, practically every Kiwi wears the All Black shirt with pride. At all matches, the stands become a sea of black that intimidates every visiting side. Interestingly though, the All Blacks have major following in other rugby playing nations. They are able to garner support away from home like almost no other international side, so that inimitable black jersey with the silver fern appears at grounds everywhere they play. Just before their end of year tour to Europe, the All Blacks took on a new sponsor in AIG, so a new logo appeared on the black shirt, which will encourage those who want to stay up-to-date to buy the new shirt. England, too, has a new sponsor, Canterbury, and England’s new shirt with the CCC logo appeared on the pitch for the first time in the end of year internationals. England’s success against the All Black’s has fuelled new hopes for a side that has had mixed results since the heady days of the 2003 Rugby World Cup victory and failed dismally in the 2011 RWC. Although rugby faces considerable competition from other sports in England, the latest win should encourage fans to wear the new Canterbury shirt in ever greater numbers. And, the regal purple change strip will be a popular alternative to the traditional white. With the possible exception of New Zealand, nowhere in the world are rugby supporters as fanatical as they are in South Africa. Once seen as a white man’s game, since its emergence from the apartheid era South African rugby has gained a much wider following at home and two Rugby World Cup successes have added to its appeal. Nowadays, fans around the world are delighted to have the green jersey with the springbok emblem in their collections of rugby shirts. Irish teams are always popular and the national side’s successes in recent years have seen the wearing of the Irish green become more popular. But it is the Leinster side that has captured the imagination with its wonderful record in European rugby. The Leinster shirt, with its unique design, will therefore be one of the top shirts for the coming year and will remain so as the side increases its fan base as success follows success. The colours of national sides are familiar to most rugby fans around the world, but usually few fans recognise the colours of domestic sides outside their own country. This is now changing with rugby increasing appeal and the broadcasting of matches of domestic competitions. The southern hemisphere Super XV competition has made the colours of sides like the Crusaders, the Waratahs and the Bulls more familiar to rugby fans in Europe while the northern hemisphere’s Heineken Cup has brought sides like Toulouse and Leicester Tigers to the notice of fans in other parts of the world. All fans love to wear their own team’s colours. Many also like to collect rugby jerseys of other prominent sides making the rugby jersey an item in the wardrobe to be shown off with pride and distinction. Canterbury of New Zealand are known for their fantastic work on and off the field of rugby and have a big impact and influence on the future of rugby sportswear and training gear.
