Prep schools are educational institutions in the United States of America that cater to students and their parents who wish to prepare for higher education. In general, these academic institutions are actually quite similar to secondary education institutions in the country but are more specialized and private. They are run by a private board of trustees and operate based on the tuition fees that they collect from the students' parents or guardians. These institutions also receive donations from outside sources such as their alumni or people who wish to help fund the school in hopes that their children can enter it in the future. These can be exclusively for just one specific gender or co-educational, depending on the concept of the academy. In the United States of America, and the better part of North America, they are commonly day schools instead of the boarding schools that are quite common in Europe and are usually co-educational instead of single sex. Subjects Although they have a different name from the generalized secondary level educational public institutions that are common in the country, prep schools have similar curriculum with many of them. The rigor that is applied to these institutions may be different in terms of the pressure that the students get from both their parents and their professors. Some variation may be present in the curriculum which may be the reason that many of the private schools may appear to have a higher standard of education than the public schools but this may be mainly due to the fact that most of these have the funding that they need to produce excellent students en masse. This is not a guarantee, however, that private schools can produce graduates who will excel because there are also many graduates from the public institutions that do excel in their schoolwork as well as in their profession in the future. Subjects The curriculum that prep schools have is similar to that of their counterparts in the public field. Usually there is an English course, which is prevalent from the first year up to the last. The English course can range from literature to reading and many others. The same goes for Mathematics and Science although these are in different fields as the student advances from freshman to senior years. These fields can include geometry, trigonometry and other more advanced courses as the student goes to the fourth year in the academy. There is also a subject about social science which can be included but is not limited to history and other sciences pertaining to this field. A subject about the government can also be included in this course. Art is also another course that is usually applied from the freshman year up to the senior year. There can be visual arts or performing arts and many others that will be applied as the students progresses to his senior year. Prep schools are all about being prepared for the coming college level that is why there is always an elective subject, which is a college lesson. Get ready for college.
