Nursing education in India today has six levels. They are Multi Purpose Health Worker Female training (ANM or MPHW-F), Female Health Supervisor training (HV or MPHS-F), General nursing and midwifery (GNM), BSc. Nursing, MSc. nursing, MPhil and PhD. The ANM, HV, and GNM are imparted in schools of nursing whereas the last 3 are university level courses and the respective universities conduct examinations. Other than the above mentioned popular courses there are several certificate and diploma courses in various specialties. All nursing courses and institutions are regulated and overseen by Indian Nursing Council, an Autonomous Body under the Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. General nursing and midwifery course is offered by over 2100 schools in the country. Nursing schools are generally affiliated to teaching hospitals. General course focuses at care of sick in the hospitals. The syllabus is thoroughly revised regularly according to the latest technological advancements in health care and changes in the health plans and policies of the Government. Changing trends and advancements in general education & nursing health sciences also influence the changes in syllabus. The eligibility for this course is class 12 and the duration is three and a half years. The objective of Bachelor of Nursing Course is to provide a balance of professional and general education which enables a student to become a professional practitioner who has decision making ability and is a responsible citizen. A candidate seeking admission in bachelor course should have passed the 2 years of pre university exam or equivalent as recognized by concerned university with science subjects i. e. Physics, biology and chemistry. At present there are around 1400 colleges recognized by Indian nursing council comprises 4 academic years. Those interested in further higher studies can go for M. Sc. Nursing. The program prepares nursing graduates to effectively meet the needs of the social change and take up leadership positions in nursing and other health related fields. It prepares nurses to function as specialist nursing practitioners, consultants, educators, administrators and investigators in a wide range of health care organizations. At pre research level M. Phil. Program is offered in Nursing. Some of the prominent nursing college offering M. Sc. Nursing include MGR Medical University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, SNDT University and Delhi University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education. An M. Phil. Nursing program aims to encourage research attitude and problem solving capacity among nursing community to provide ground training for undertaking doctoral work in nursing. Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing was first started in India in 1992. Universities where PhD programmes are conducted in India include RAK College of Nursing, NIMHANS Banglore & Manipal University. PhD Consortium by Indian Nursing Council, RUGHS and WHO also offers PhD nursing program. For all nursing courses the candidate should be medically fit.
