For Immediate Release June 1, 2012 Contact Susan Wells 802-760-7685 Employment Institute brings together employment specialists and AHScase managers Part of effort to expand job opportunities for those served throughAHS South Burlington, VT – VocRehab Vermont will host the Employment Institute III on June 4at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center, bringing togetheremployment specialists and case managers serving clients of theAgency of Human Services (AHS) through Creative Workforce Solutions(CWS). CWS is an initiative designed to coordinate employeroutreach across all departments of the Agency, thus eliminatingduplicative outreach to employers and expanding job opportunitiesfor those served through AHS programs. The Institute will offer service providers the opportunity to hearinnovations in employment assistance to individuals withbarriers to employment such as disabilities, poverty andcorrections involvement. The keynote speaker will be Dr. PaulHarrington, Director of the Center for Labor Market Studies atDrexel University, who is a nationally recognized expert in thefields of Human Resource Policy and Planning, Economics ofEducation and Workforce Development, and Higher Education Policyand Planning. Dr. Harrington will discuss national trends in employer engagementand how to address employer fears about hiring candidates withbarriers to employment using the consultative model versus jobdevelopment. Dr. Harrington will also present a workshop aboutthe pitfalls of labor market analysis, the challenges facing thosewith long-term unemployment, and how to use labor marketinformation to help candidates identify career goals and options. Other workshop topics will include the use of progressiveemployment as a tool for skill development and employer engagement,motivational interviewing, employment and substance abuse andco-occurring disorders, working with individuals with correctionsinvolvement, employing survivors of traumatic brain injury andassistive technology for the workplace. During the luncheon, the Governor s Committee on Employment ofPeople with Disabilities will present awards to individuals andcompanies who have exemplary practices in hiring individuals withdisabilities and who have demonstrated innovative solutions foraccessible buildings.
