Art displayed in your home or on your walls is one way to show off your great taste, but nobody said art had to be limited to canvas and frames. While you might think that lampwork jewelry is trendy and pretty, most don’t realize what an art form it really is. Lampwork jewelry consists of decorative glass beads strung together with spacers, charms, and other kinds of beads. Lampwork beads can be textured, colored, swirled, or even have other beads within the original glass orb. An artisan or hand-crafted strand of these glass beads are going to have some weight behind them, making them better suited for bracelets or watches. They could be used in earrings or necklaces, but they might be heavy and uncomfortable. The Creative Process What makes these beads beautiful are their uniqueness. Each bead is hand-blown and made individually. The process is the same as any other kind of glasswork that you might see in lamps, figurines, or mirrors. Glass is shaped through a heating and cooling process done at precise temperatures with precise movements. Colors and textures are added along the way using different colored strands of glass. Precious metals, like gold and silver, can even be fumed in. Finally, the glass goes through a cooling process called annealing, which requires a special kiln. This process can make or break—literally—the formation of the beads. Annealing slowly cools the beads down at one time, which requires about six to ten hours. If glass isn’t annealed, or is left to cool on its own, different parts cool off at different times, creating stress points in the glass, which makes it more prone to breakage. If properly annealed, the beads become extremely durable and difficult to break or shatter. A Lifelong Treasure Because of the craftsmanship that goes into these beads, whole pieces can get a little more expensive than your average department store knockoff. Of course, replicas are available at lower costs due to mass production—which removes the annealing process—but they aren’t going to have the quality or uniqueness that an artisan can provide.
