GAINESVILLE, Va. -- A man who pleaded guilty less than a year ago to seven burglariesserved only seven months in jail, and went right back to breakinginto homes at night while residents slept, police allege. On July 26, a 61-year-old Haymarket-area man told police he saw anintruder in dark clothing and a mask in the backyard of his home inthe 13600 block of Heythrope Court in Heritage Hunt at 4:10 a.m.,Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said. The resident and his 54-year-old wife saw the burglar, lateridentified as William Russell Griffin, go inside a neighbor"sgarage and confronted him, police said. The couple tried to detain Griffin after demanding he leave thegarage, but police said Griffin assaulted them before getting away.
One of the victims was able to grab Griffin's wallet before hefled. Officers determined the garage door was left open and Griffin didnot force entry. Nothing was stolen from the garage and the victimswere not hurt. During the investigation, police discovered Alexandria Hope Bergmanhelped Griffin plan the burglary, according to Perok, who did notprovide further details.
Griffin, 25, of no fixed address, was charged with two counts of assault and battery and one count of burglary,Perok said. Bergman, 19, of 13456 Victory Gallop Way near Haymarket, wascharged with one count of burglary, Perok said. Three more burglaries are now linked to Griffin, police said. On May 9, a homeowner reported money missing after a burglary inthe 13700 block of Charismatic Way, Gainesville.
Money was also taken from a home in the 6000 block of Piney GroveWay, Gainesville, on April 28. A third burglary, on Ryton Ridge Lane, had been unreported untilthe investigation. While investigating, officers said they found a safe taken fromRyton Ridge Lane and clothing and the mask Griffin was said to bewearing during the Heythrope Court burglary. Griffin now faces three additional counts of burglary, two countsof grand larceny, and one count of petit larceny in connection withthose three incidents. Griffin is being held without bond, Perok said.
His next court dateis October 12. Additional charges against Bergman include two counts of burglary,one count of grand larceny, one count of petit larceny, and onecount of conspiracy to commit burglary. She's being held on a $17,000 secured bond and has a court date ofOctober 12. Griffin was arrested in February 2011 for a series of burglaries in Montclair. He pleaded guilty toseven counts of burglary and was sentenced in October 2011 to fiveyears in prison, with all but time served suspended.
His arrest came after Griffin was stopped by officers in DinwiddieCounty, near Petersburg, with a vehicle and property that werereported stolen in Prince William County, Perok said. The stolen property connected Griffin to burglaries that occurredin the 15800 block of Edgewood Drive in the November and December2010, Perok said. Police believe Griffin snuck into the house on Edgewood Drivethrough an open garage door and then through an unlocked house doorwhile the occupants were asleep. Police also believe that Griffin took a spare key to the vehicleand used the car several times over the period of a month while theowners were asleep. Police said that during the first burglary, Griffin unlocked awindow for future entries to the house on Edgewood Drive where aniPod and camera were reported missing, Perok said.
Similar tactics were used in other burglaries in Montclair andpolice believe Griffin was involved in those burglaries as well,Perok said. Police also arrested Tony Michael Vaccarino, 24, of 1417 HarrisonSt. in Woodbridge in connection to a burglary in the 4200 block ofAvon Drive where a television was reported stolen. Vaccarino pleaded guilty to burglary and grand larceny and wassentenced in November 2011 to five years with all but time servedsuspended. According to police, Griffin appeared to be sentenced withinrecommended guidelines.
Those guidelines are prepared by probationofficers before sentencing hearings and take into account the crimethat was committed, a defendant's prior criminal record and othercircumstances surrounding the crime. Chief Charlie Deane, who hopes to talk to the Virginia CriminalSentencing Commission about Griffin's short jail stint, said in astatement: "The nighttime breaking and entering into occupiedhomes by a masked intruder is a troubling and inherently dangerouscrime that should result in severe punishment and controls designedto protect the community. That clearly did not occur in the 2011cases in Montclair. As a result, within months he continued thesame crime pattern in the Gainesville area.".
