The Japanese auto giant Honda is just a few months away from the launch of their first ever diesel car – Honda Amaze – in the Indian market. The unconfirmed media reports claim that Honda Amaze launch date is 18th April 2013, which is yet to be confirmed by the company. The car will be positioned in the entry level sedan segment where it will be competing with the likes Maruti Swift Dzire, Chevrolet Sail, Tata Indigo CS, Mahindra Verito and Toyota Etios. It is expected that the company will keep the Honda Amaze price competitively low in the segment of Rs 6 to 8 lakh. The Honda Amaze diesel model is expected to come powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged Earth Dreams i-DTEC engine, which is likely to be highly fuel efficient with an expected power out-put of around 90 bhp. However, it remains to be seen how this diesel debut of Honda performs and what response it receives from the car enthusiasts in a country where they have large base of admirers. In Europe, the Earth Dreams i-DTEC engine will be offered in bigger 1.6L volume with higher power and torque statics. But due to higher taxes for cars having a diesel engine of over 1.5L, the Indian version would be carrying a trimmed 1.5 liter engine. The Amaze model is already available in Thailand where the car was launched November last year. Coming to the Honda Amaze Mileage, the debuting diesel engine is expected to offer a high fuel economy of up to 16 km per liter in city areas and up to 22 km per liter on highways. Moreover, the car would be delivering excellent pick-up and acceleration, considering the use of advanced technologies and light weight aerodynamic body of the car. The Amaze model will be based on their highly popular Brio hatchback, which is currently one of the highest selling cars of Honda in India. The new Honda Amaze is a sub 4 meter car which will enable it to qualify for the lesser excise duty segment of 12 percent in comparison to the 24 to 27 percent for the bigger sedans. In addition to this, the company is likely to use as much as 80 percent locally sourced content in the manufacturing of the car. Both of these factors will certainly help the company in pricing the car competitively low against the highly successful rival Maruti Swift Dzire, which is also a sub 4 meter car and is offered in the price range of Rs 4.92-7.5 lakh (exshowroom Delhi). Learning a lesson or two from the flop show of Jazz hatchbacks in India around two year back (due to its extravagant price tag), the company may like to keep the price as low as possible. The preparations for this launch have already begun as the car maker has already started strengthening its dealership network in the country, where they are targeting to have a base of 5 lakh car buyers as potential customers of Amaze.
