Much of the flavor and aroma you see in the whiskey comes from wood that has been matured. The barrel provides over 50% of flavor to the final result and therefore is crucial in the maturation of whiskey. Normally distilleries not detail what type of barrel used for whiskey, except some like Macallan, Balvenie and Glendronach. Sometimes independent bottlers buy a cask at the distillery and usually if you put all the information available on the barrel. Butt A barrel of 500 liters tall, narrow oak stakes made with European and mainly used in the industry of Spanish sherry in Jerez. Puncheon It's a 500-liter barrel low and wide which is usually made of oak or American or Spanish oak. It is also often used in the wine industry to mature sherry and rum. Barrique This is the standard barrels used in the wine industry. They have 300 liter capacity. Are often used to give a final whiskey. Hogshead The word derives from the English term hogshead Hogges hede using in the fifteenth century to refer to a unit of measurement equal to 63 gallons. It is a 225 liter barrel capaciad and today are made with American oak. Used to create bourbon, by law, and then sent to Scotland and Ireland to mature whiskey. It is the most common type of barrel. ASB The ASB is the American standard barrel and hogshead drift that have reduced its capacity to 200 liters for easy handling. Like the hogshead, are widely used in the bourbon industry. Quarter Cask It's a quarter cask of ASB, 50 liters, but maintains the original aspect ratio of the American standard barrel. Being so small very quickly give the whiskey flavor. Uses and previous content Whether they would have had the barrel before we can speak of a barrel of sherry, bourbon, Sauternes.
