According to recent research, about one in every five people is affected by at least one allergy at some point in their life. Moreover, the number of people who suffer from allergies is getting bigger every single year. More than half of the people who get affected are children and babies. Which are the most common allergy types? In most of the cases, people suffer from an allergy to pollens, mould, house dust mites, wasps, bees, pets like cats and dogs, household and industrial chemicals, and foods like milk, eggs and nuts. Sometimes, you can be allergic to some medicines like penicillin or metals like nickel and even some jewelry. What are the most important symptoms of an allergy? The symptoms which are most common for the popular allergies include sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, coughing, wheezing and itchy rashes of the skin. The type of symptoms you will get depend on your particular type of allergy and the way you come in contact with the allergen that triggers the allergic reaction. For example, in case you happen to inhale pollen you might find it difficult to breathe. If you put a lotion that has some chemical you are allergic to on your skin, you might suffer from contact dermatitis at the spot. You might even end up vomiting or feeling nauseous in case you eat a food you are allergic to. What is an allergic illness? Some of the symptoms of an allergy can be conditions by themselves. Such are: - Hay fever – typical for this condition is having a runny nose, a blocked nose, sneezing and itchy eyes that result from the contact with pollen. - Eczema – an itchy inflammation of your skin which is often connected to some allergy. You can suffer eczema if you come into contact with house dust mites, some kinds of food, pet hair and pollen. - Asthma – a breathing problem which is often triggered by allergens like house dust mites, pets, moulds and pollens. - Allergic rhinitis – a condition similar to hay fever. However, it can occur during the whole year. - Urticaria – a rash which is red, bumpy and itchy. It is part of an allergic reaction to insect bites, drugs and pets. - Allergic eye disease (also called allergic conjunctivitis) – your eyes become really itchy and extremely red after they have been in contact with a certain allergen such as pet hair or pollen. Can you inherit an allergy? Some people are a lot more likely to be allergic to certain substances because there are allergies in their family. If this is the case for you, you might be referred to as atopic. Boys are a lot more likely to suffer from inherited allergies than girls. Are allergic reactions really dangerous? There are mild, moderate and severe allergic reactions. Some of them might even threaten your life. Such allergic reactions are called anaphylaxis. The latter is a medical condition that needs immediate medical attention as well as prompt treatment.
