Printing Brisbane - Pros and cons for Spot Colour printing

Business
Spot colour printing is the oldest type of offset printing, and is still very valid for certain applications in the Brisbane printing market. Spot colour work is most commonly printed on older 1 & 2 colour press’, but can also be printed on a 4 colour press in ‘spot colour mode’. This just means that rather than the specific PMS colour wanted is run through the press instead of CMYK.

In Brisbane, spot colour printing is most commonly used for envelopes, letterheads , invoice books, business cards, Brochures, Flyers etc. Some of the major advantages of Spot colour printing are:

1 – Exact colour matching

Spot colour printing allows for exact colour matching, which is often a priority for large business and corporations. Because we are mixing the ink by hand to match a sample, we can guarantee exact colour matching.

2 – Group runs of business cards for large companies ordering cards for multiple staff.

For larger companies in Brisbane who regularly order business cards for multiple staff, spot colour printing can be a very cost effective option. The larger set up cost is offset by the smaller run on costs, meaning a cheaper price for your group run of business cards over all.

3- Cost effective for larger runs

Although the initial set up cost may be higher than full colour work, spot colour printing can be more cost effective for larger runs of 1-3 colour letterheads, flyers, brochures, business cards , presentation folders in Brisbane.

Like all printing process’, spot colour is not the best option for some work. Some disadvantages of spot colour printing in Brisbane are:

1 – Limited number of colours

For Brisbane, Spot colour printing is most cost effective in 1 or 2 colours. While you could theoretically print 5 or 10 colours in PMS, it would be prohibitively expensive because of the multiple passes required through the press.

2- No colour photos

Photos cannot be printed in colour when using PMS printing in Brisbane. Photos can be converted to grey scale or black & white instead.

3 – Expensive for small runs, because each job is ‘stand alone’ and can not be printed in a group run. Because each job is printed using that specific ink, the press must go through a ‘wash up’ between each print job. This means that the set up costs are higher than full colour printing, but the run on costs are smaller because they can be printed on an older press.

4 – Celloglaze is very expensive

Because spot colour work is not printed in group runs, celloglazing is very expensive. This means that ‘rub off’ is common in Brisbane, when business cards are kept in a wallet and the ink from the front of one business card transfers to the back of the next.

Uniprint QLD is based at 16 Hemlock St, Warner, QLD, 4500. We are a general printer for the greater Brisbane area, so we print for clients in north & south Brisbane and Brisbane CBD.
