Granite countertops have become popular in contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. Available in many colors, textures and patterns, granite can enhance any home décor. Granite provides an extremely hard surface which is resistant to heat and scratches. When properly sealed, simple cleaning and stain avoidance will keep a granite countertop looking polished and shiny for many years. These cleaners are pH neutral--neither acidic nor alkaline--and come in smooth liquid form, which will not scratch the granite. Use a soft cloth to apply the cleaning liquid to the counter top and rub gently. Rinse the countertop thoroughly after cleaning, and dry it with another soft cloth. If you cannot find a specialty stone soap, then use mild dish-washing liquid and warm water, again rinsing the countertop well after cleaning. However, repeated use of dish-washing soap as a cleaner will build up residue that can dull the surface of the granite. What Not to Use Do not use common household cleaners such as glass cleaner, bleach or de-greasers. These cleaners contain harsh chemicals that will harm the granite. Cleaners that are acidic or alkaline will degrade the granite sealer and may even etch into the stone. Natural cleaners such as lemon juice, vinegar or orange oil are also acidic and should not to be used. Cleaners that contain any kind of abrasive powders, such as tub and tile cleaners, will create minuscule surface scratches in the countertop and will dull its surface. Avoid Stains With regular cleaning, a granite countertop will look polished and shiny for a long time. To avoid serious stains that will need stronger cleaning, blot up any spills when they occur. Immediately remove any dirt or grit on the countertop. Do not pull anything across the granite surface as this could create slight scratches in its polished surface in which stains can reside.
